2011 American League West Previews: Mariners

Today’s Focus: SEATTLE MARINERS

2010 Record: 61-101 (Last in Division; Last in AL)

2010 saw 24 fewer wins than in 2009 and 2009 saw 24 more wins than in 2008. So what gives? Well, Cliff Lee only pitched 13 games for them, Erik Bedard was a no-show, the ever-consistent Jose Lopez had his worst season, Milton Bradley played terrible WHEN he played, newcomer Chone Figgins stole some bases but little else, and Casey Kotchman was dreadful. Oh, and the M’s were just 17-40 vs. the AL West. But 2010 wasn’t all that bad in Seattle – Felix Hernandez won the Cy and the Mariners avoided having the worst record in baseball! (Go Pirates!)

So what team is going to show up this year? Well, 2011 looks to be another lost season. While the Rangers, Angels, and A’s were making moves, the Mariners made their own by signing fantasy first-round talents such as Jack Cust, Brendan Ryan, and Miguel Olivo. Oy vey!

All hope cannot be lost for the future, as Dustin Ackley and Michael Pineda are on their way – sooner than later fans hope. Ackley looks ready to make an impact at some point this season as does Pineda who will be a fabulous addition to go along with King Felix for years to come

Notable Losses Include: Russell Branyan, Jose Lopez, Casey Kotchman

Notable Pick Ups: Miguel Olivo, Brendan Ryan, Jack Cust

Seattle will hope to win 60 games again this season, but the pitching staff is again shaky, especially if Bedard is on the sidelines yet again. You know what you’re getting with Ichiro, but he’s getting older. You have to assume Figgins will be better and Smoak has the potential to be solid. Besides that, count the days until Ackley and Pineda are on the team…

My 2011 Projected Record: 60-102 (Last place)
