This week in spring training the news was as follows, beginning with last Sunday and running through Saturday the 26th:
Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost stated Luke Hochevar will start the season opener March 31 against the Los Angeles Angels….
Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper left Monday’s minor league intrasquad scrimmage in Viera, Fla. after spraining his left ankle. Don’t worry though, reports indicate it will be healed by 2012 when he has a chance to be fantasy relevant….
Reds starter Johnny Cueto will miss the start of the season because of an inflamed pitching shoulder….
The Philadelphia Phillies signed second baseman Luis Castillo to a minor league contract on Monday. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about drafting Chase Utley this year……
The New York Mets released pitcher Oliver Perez on Monday, two days after his minor league embarrassment. The Mets will absorb the $12 million remaining on Perez’s $36 million, three-year contract. Not to worry though, the Nationals have decided they can fix him….
Bartolo Colon made another strong bid for a spot in the Yankees’ rotation, allowing one run over six innings in New York’s 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. Don’t get too excited more news to come later on Bartolo….
Roy Halladay looked ready for opening day this week, pitching into the eighth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Monday….
The Washington Nationals have placed Stephen Strasburg on the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from elbow surgery performed last September. Doctors have said his recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12 to 18 months….
Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson might not be ready for opening day because of a strained muscle on his right side….
Toronto pitcher Brandon Morrow will start the regular season on the disabled list because of inflammation in his forearm….
Texas Rangers pitcher Brandon Webb has been scratched from a scheduled bullpen session because he was unable to get loosened up to pitch. Buyer beware on this feel good comeback story….
Knocked down by a line drive to the neck, Roy Oswalt put a scare into the Phillies. The team felt better after X-rays revealed there was nothing beyond a bruise the team says may not prevent him from making his next scheduled start….
Cole Hamels had another shaky outing, giving up six runs Thursday in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins….
Mike Stanton hit two three-run homers and had seven RBIs in his spring training debut, and the Florida Marlins beat the Red Sox 15-7 Thursday….
San Francisco Giants outfielder Cody Ross is expected to miss the next three weeks because of a strained right calf….
Neftali Feliz will continue in the closer role for the AL champion Texas Rangers. Which should be good news for his value in fantasy leagues this year….
The Phillies closer Brad Lidge was shut down on Friday with shoulder soreness and word is he is likely to begin the season on the disabled list….
Bud Black confirmed that Matt Latos would miss his opening day assignment against the St. Louis Cardinals with an inflamed bursa sac….
The Milwaukee Brewers traded outfielder Chris Dickerson to the New York Yankees for pitcher Sergio Mitre. Some possible value with Mitre until Greinke comes back from the DL, but not much to see here….
San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson still isn’t sure whether he’ll be ready for opening day. We may have to wait to fear the beard….
Jason Hammel pitched well and Carlos Gonzalez hit his first home run of the spring, sending Colorado to a 4-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics….
Texas Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson left his spring start after two innings because of tightness in his left hamstring….
Albert Pujols homered twice and Chris Carpenter pitched six innings, but the Florida Marlins rallied for three runs off Ryan Franklin in the bottom of the ninth to beat St. Louis 6-5 on Saturday.
Daisuke Matsuzaka had his best six innings before Bobby Jenks gave up six runs in the ninth, letting the Minnesota Twins rally past Boston 9-8 Saturday night….
The New York Yankees announced their rotation Saturday, giving the nod to Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia as starters and placing Bartolo Colon in the bullpen. Seems to me like Bartolo had earned the spot….
Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Silva has been told he will not be on the team’s 25-man roster when the season starts Friday. Andrew Cashner will be the Cubs fifth starter….
