04.11.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Was anyone else astounded by how much the ESPN crew during the Rays/Sawx game was bashing Manny? I never heard guys talk so harshly about another player, even calling him an “idiot” and “stupid.” Hilarious! It was all true of course, but McDonough, Sutcliffe and Boone are just horrible. Anyway, here are some more observations from Monday’s games…

Alexi Ogando – 7 IP, 2 H, 4:1…Ogando was awesome-o at Detroit. He outpitched Verlander and again left early because of blisters. C’mon! I first told you I liked Ogando during spring training and to give him a look in deeper leagues (here) and then I told you to monitor him for all of your leagues after his first start against the Mariners (here). I am now telling you to either grab him off your wire or wait until his start at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. If he pitches well on that stage, it might be too late. This guy is a converted outfielder and only pitched 70+ innings last year in his first season as a pitcher, so he might not last too long. Won’t stop you from speculating and selling high later on!

Justin Verlander – CG, 6 H, 2 ER, 4:1…Verlander was cruising until the 7th when he let in the only two runs of the game. Besides that, he was decent. Not awesome-o, just decent. Could’ve used some more Ks. Hey, the terrible Aprils may be a thing of the past. Verlander came prepared this season ready to wreck sh-t, Albany Kegs-and-Eggs style, yo! His remaining April schedule is: OAK, CHW, and SEA. Tasty!

Daisuke Matsuzaka – 2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2:2…Send this guy back to radioactive Japan already. How is he owned in even 12% of Yahoo leagues???

Sam Fuld – 4/6, 3 R, HR, 3 RBI…For all intents and purposes, he pretty much hit for the cycle. Joe Maddon was even yelling to him to stop at first on his 9th inning double. I can’t exactly recommend Fuld, but he looked awesome at the plate and in the field.

Jeremy Hellickson – 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1:5…Walkboy should be thankful the Buccaneers put up 16 points on the Sawx, because he didn’t deserve a win in this one. Look, he’s pitching for a crap team and he’s a rookie. Expect some stinkers (not many), but he will just fine – and I’d be shocked if we saw him walk this many guys again anytime soon. Twins on Saturday!

Dallas Braden – 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 7:2…I know I’m in the minority, but I like Braden. He seems to be pretty serviceable and he mixes in some real nice starts like this one. Alas, he pitches for the A’s so one run equals loss or no decision. “This is Dallas!”

Mark Buerhle – 8 IP, 2 H, 1:1…My goodness I thought he was gonna no-hit the A’s. Matt Thornton came in to blow the save op and leave Mark with a big fat ND. Did I mention I drafted Thornton as a my #2 closer? Yeah, I dropped his arse over the weekend.

Lance Berkman – 2/5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…Brian told you Puma was a bounceback candidate. Did you listen in your deep league? Will be interesting to see what he does now that Holliday is back and once Pujols gets going.

Mat Latos – 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 7:2…In his first start off the DL (where I expect him to spend more time this year), Latos pretty much held the Redlegs in check. However, pitching in Petco for an AGonz-less team means that 3 runs will usually do you in. And it did.

Edinson Volquez – 6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5:3…A quality start for Edinson as he avoided a terrible first inning. Nevermind. He gave up his two runs in the first. Volquez’ 1st inning ERA: 27.00. ERA after the first inning: 1.28. Buy.

Asdrubal Cabrera – 1/3, HR, RBI, BB…Unreal. Now has 4 HR in his first 10 games. You thought I was joking, but he needs to get “randomly” tested.

Matt LaPorta – 1/3, HR, 3 RBI, BB…Hello, Mr. LaPorta. The shine of your top prospect label has greatly worn off.

Mitch Talbot – 8 IP, 5 H, 4:2…Say what?

Clayton Kershaw – 6.2 IP, 6 H, 7:2…Not incredibly efficient, but Kershaw shut the Giants down. Mike says: Cy Young hopeful! I did say that didn’t I.

Madison Bumgarner – 5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3:4…It’s not looking pretty in the early going. Drop him now. Then I will pick him up. Thank you.

Matt Kemp – 1/2, R, RBI, 2 BB, SB…You thought you could get through this without a Kemp update? 7 steals. 0 caught stealings.

Brandon Belt – 0/4, 3 K…Ouch. Now hitting .143. Chances that he gets demoted once Ross comes back are getting better.

Felix Hernandez – 6 IP, 12 H, 7 ER, 6:2…Just a blip. A big friggin blip, but a blip nonetheless.

Jesse Litsch – 5 IP, 5 H, 4:4…Remember 2008, his last full season, where he posted a line of 13-9/3.58/1.23/99? I do, but I am getting older fast because I thought that was last year! Monitor him, but know he throws about 50 pitches per inning. And DON’T watch him, because he’s as frustrating to watch as a Bonderman/Dice-K pitch-off.

On the injury front, Rafael Furcal will be out indefinitely with a broken thumb. Will he come back or retire?
