Happy Monday, welcome to Spot Starting.
For games on Tuesday April 26th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
Zach Britton 47% / 55% (BAL) vs. BOS
Chris Young 23% / 7% (NYM) @ WAS
Wade Davis 17% / 43% (TB) @ MIN
Brandon McCarthy 17% /21% (OAK) @ LAA
Bud Norris 17% / 3% (HOU) vs. StL
Mike Leake 7% / 6% (CIN) @ MIL
My Pick: Brandon McCarthy at Angels
Alternate: Bud Norris vs. Cardinals
Deep League Special: Mike Leake @ Brewers
McCarthy was my Deep League Special in his last start and his performance didn’t disappoint, though he was the hard luck loser as the A’s got blanked 1-0. McCarthy has allowed only 1 ER in his last 14.2 IP, 3 in 22 to go with a 9:1 K/BB ratio in that span. His peripherals are all in line as well so it isn’t luck. .286 BABIP, 2.45 FI. He has come back to the bigs as a Fly Ball pitcher to a ground ball pitcher. His HR/FB rate is about the only thing that looks suspect as it will regress a tad, especially away from The Coliseum.
Norris is very quietly striking out more than 1 batter per 9. He also loves to face the Cardinals, going 3-1 in 2010 with 27K in 26.2 IP, 3.38 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, .242 BAA, those numbers were even better at Busch Stadium as his only loss came at home.
Leake surprised us last week as he pitched pretty well after his embarrassing legal issues came to light picking up his 3rd win and continuing to strike out around 8/9IP. He hasn’t faced the Brewers which should be to his advantage. His xFIP of 3.79 says he’s been a bit unlucky in the early going as well.
Britton’s ownership has slid a bit as folks who picked him up after his first two dominating starts have already jumped ship, let’s see how he adjusts facing a red hot Red Sox team. Young is coming back off the DL and as I’ve said before I can never recommend slotting a guy in right away in his first start back. Davis’ extreme lack of strikeouts and high walk totals scream stay away even against a weakened Twins lineup.
Results from Sunday 04.24.11:
Brandon Beachy: ND, 6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 0 BB… Beachy put up an even better line than I predicted minus the win which was blown by the Braves pen before they came back in extras. No walks, and only 3 hits is impressive and Beachy should be on your watch list.
Kevin Correia (my pick from 04.23.11): L, 4.2 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB, 2 HR… The extra day of rest sure didn’t help Correia as he got knocked around a bit.
Randy Wolf: W, 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB… Wolf turned in another outstanding start and is off to a fantastic start, he should be on more fantasy teams than he is.
Season Results (my pick only):
53 IP, 5-2, 46 H, 21 ER, 45 K, 16 BB, 3.57 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
