04.27.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

The Bats:
Joey Votto – 2/4, R, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB…Just another day at the ballpark.

Drew Stubbs – 2/5, 3 R, HR, RBI, BB…Walks up, Ks down and less streakiness for this “September Star”.

Jeff Francoeur – 2/4, R, HR, RBI…Frenchy continues to rake and the only noticeable change in his peripherals is that he’s hitting a lot more ground balls than ever before. Uhm, regression is coming.

Shin-Soo Choo – 2/2, R, BB, SB…He’s coming around the mountain.

Chris B. Young – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…Batting lead-off has been good to CBY, but I expect him to move down the order shortly.

Placido Polanco – 4/5, 3 R…Just gets the job done.

Jimmy Rollins – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…J-Roll with his first dinger and he had more RBI in this one than he’s had all of this year.

Justin Smoak – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 5 RBI, BB…2 HR since coming off the DL yesterday and now has 3 HR in his last 3 games. Talent is there, so keep monitoring.

Juan Rivera – 3/4, R, 2 RBI, BB…Traded Vernon Wells and got Vernon Wells in return. Smart.

Matt Holliday – 3/4, R, HR, 2RBI, BB….Batting .429 as Jesse rejoices that our Holliday-Kemp trade is no longer lopsided…

The Arms:
Bartolo Colon
– 8 IP, 7 H, ER, 6:1…Honestly, he looked pretty good and even hit 95 on the gun. Worth a look since he pitches for the Yanks.

Jeremy Guthrie – 6 IP, 7 H, 6:1…Guthrie looks to be continuing the success he had in 2008 and 2010. Definitely give him a look. You still have to figure the Orioles’ bats are going to wake up in a big way. Just seems they have not broken out just yet so when they do he could get a decent amount of wins.

Yovani Gallardo – 5 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 3:3…He’s having such a strange season that I am inclined to tell you to HOLD right now.

Tyson Ross – 7 IP, 4 H, 3:1…He was just breezing through the Halos line-up, but I was confused when he came out after just 77 pitches. Building up the arm strength? Building his confidence? Fine.

Dan Haren – 7 IP, 3 H, 5:2…Let down by his defense, but still managed a ND thanks to the A’s defense.

Tommy Hanson – 7 IP, 4 H, 10:1…Now this makes me feel better after taking him before Weaver. This was Weaver-esque! Now (3-3) with a 2.57 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 34 K in 35 innings.

Mat Latos – 5 IP, 7 H, ER, 5:1…Gave up 6 runs thanks to Brad Hawpe. But, the line looks solid and I believe Latos will be fine – until he gets hurt again.

Josh Tomlin – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3:1…Was the Royals, but he’s now (4-0) with a 2.45 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. Sell.

Cole Hamels – 7 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8:1…Kind of start I expect to see from Hamels. The season everyone expected is here.

Erik Bedard – 7 IP, 5 H, ER, 3:0…Nice! No walks. If he was pitching to contact he needs to do it more. Keep monitoring.

Justin Verlander – 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 8:3…A HR to Smoak in the first did him in. Still his best April without question. Look for 2011 to be his best year yet.

Madison Bumgarner – 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 7:1…Here we go, MadBum! I’ll be interested to check his line drives in this one on FanGraphs on the morrow. Kept the walks down though. Great sign.

James McDonald – 6 IP, 4 H, 3:4…Remember when everyone was gaga over him in the pre-season? Not me, man.

Kyle Lohse – 7 IP, 4 H, 2:1…Taking notice NOW? 1.64 ERA and 0.73 WHIP. Dave Duncan is the Master!

Eduardo Sanchez – IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 K, SV…Just when we thought Boggs was LaRussa’s new closer, the darkhorse Sanchez gets a save opp. Was NOT pretty though. Who’s next in line, Mark Mulder?

Francisco Liriano – 3 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 4:4…(1-4) now. Gross. Did you know his fastball is nearly 2 MPH slower this year? He is also walking 3.5 more guys per 9 than last year. Result? Loss of Killboy’s hair for owning him. Seriously though, look at his peripherals. They do not look good by any stretch of the imagination.
