2011 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Gems: National League

I know, we should have told you that Jesse owned Ryan Zimmerman before your draft. Our bad. I will now offer a few NL waivers to help compensate for your loss.

Ben Francisco, OF Philadelphia Phillies (22% owned in Yahoo, 34.8 % in ESPN)

Current Stat Line – .266 AVG / 10 R / 4 HR / 18 RBI / 2 SB

I have already mentioned Ben Francisco here but not many have listened. He is now hitting in the 5 spot everyday and has 6 RBI in his last 4 games. Domonic Brown is currently rehabing but I would be more concerned about that if I was a Raul Ibanez owner. I don’t know what else you want from this guy.

My Projection: .270 AVG / 80 R / 23 HR / 85 RBI / 10 SB

Ryan Roberts, 3B/OF Arizona Diamondbacks (52 % owned in Yahoo, 92.4% ESPN)

Current Stat Line – .313 AVG / 11 R / 5 HR / 15 RBI / 3 SB

In the past week his ownership in ESPN has gone from 47.6 to 92.4. In the past two games, Roberts has been hitting 5th for the D-Backs. He has shown superb plate discipline with a BB rate of 14.7 percent and K rate of 17.2 percent. In Arizona, these numbers may not be a mirage. His only MLB season that he logged 300+ AB was 2009 and he walked 40 times while striking out only 55 times. Roberts has never shown much power in minors and his current HR/FB rate is 20.8 percent. So for those of you looking for power, I suggest you look elsewhere because I can’t see him hitting more than 5 HR in any given month going forward.

My Projection: .280 AVG / 65 R / 15 HR / 70 RBI / 15 SB

Darwin Barney, 2B/SS Chicago Cubs (33 % owned in Yahoo, 69.8 ESPN)

Current Stat Line – .326 AVG / 15 R / 1 HR / 14 RBI / 1 SB

Darwin Barney has been quite the little spark plug for the Chicago Cubs. It’s like they cloned Ryan Theriot and gave him a really stupid name. He is hitting 2nd for the Cubbies and I expect him to be a solid contributor in the runs and batting average departments from this point forward. The multi-position eligibility at 2B and SS is just icing on the cake.

My Projection: .285 AVG / 85 R / 3 HR / 60 RBI / 12 SB

Kevin Correia, SP Pittsburgh Pitates (23 % owned in Yahoo, 22.4 ESPN)

Current Stat Line – 4 W / 2 L / 2.90 ERA / 1.09 WHIP / 18 K

Kevin Correia has made himself a pitcher of interest after his gem in Coors Field (6.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB). Correia has been getting it done with his control this year with only 9 BB in 40.1 IP. His 2.90 ERA in due for a correction judging by his low BABIP of .233 so don’t be afraid to dump him when the time is right. He has a favorable matchup against San Diego this week.

My Projection: 12 W / 12 L / 4.15 ERA / 1.29 WHIP / 130 K

Randy Wolf, Milwaukee Brewers (46% owned in Yahoo, 83.2 ESPN)

Current Stat Line – 3 W / 2 L / 2.39 ERA / 1.12 WHIP / 33 K

Randy Wolf never seems to  get any respect even though he has had some pretty useful seasons in recent years. His is SwStr% of 8.5 and K/9 of 7.88 are the highest marks he has posted in 3 years. He has shown confidence in his slider by throwing it 20.2 % of the time and he pitches for a team that scores runs.

My Projection: 14 W / 9 L / 3.52 ERA / 1.20 WHIP / 172 K
