05.01.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Add another 3B to the scrap pile as David Freese broke a bone in his hand. Be sure to look at Brian and Killboy’s suggestions as possible corner infield substitutes until he comes back.
Carlos Lee
had a nasty collision with Killboy-favorite Angel Sanchez that might have looked worse than it actually was. He was carted off the field, but preliminary x-rays revealed no broken bones in his chest. This after blasting a 3-run HR.

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Matt Holliday
– 2/3, R, 2 RBI, BB…Matty Ho continues to rake as his average is still above .400 at a cool .418.

Curtis Granderson – 3/4, R, HR, 3 RBI…His 8th homer and better yet his average is up to .281. THRIVING in the jackhole (two-hole).

Garrett Jones – 2/4, 3 RBI, BB…Pick him up yet?

Matt Joyce – 3/3, R, RBI, BB, SB…Pick HIM up yet? C’mon! New readers excused.

Hanley Ramirez – 1/5, R, HR, 2 RBI…His first homer. It’s a start!

Mike Aviles – 3/5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, SB…Box score filler-upper! Look out as Aviles is heating up and doing his best to prove me right.

Adam Dunn – 1/1, R, HR, 2 RBI…Pinch-hit HR. Ozzie considers a line-up composed of Dunn pinch-hitting for every player, but then reads the rule book and drops 20 F-bombs at Selig.

Luke Scott – 2/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…Three HR in the past four games. It’s about that time for a Luke Scott Month-to-Remember! Let’s play.

Ryan Roberts – 2/3, 2 R, HR RBI, BB…Batted sixth today as he tries to get ‘Zona to forget about Mar(K) Reynolds. Hey, a Zimmerman/Freese fill-in!

Ronny Paulino – 5/7, RBI…Chances are not a single person had him in their line-up – or even on their team!

The Arms:
Justin Masterson
– 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7:2…I told Brian it would not last, so he traded him. Not sure he needed me to tell him that, but “it” is lasting a little longer than expected. He is still (5-0) and this was his first decision that was not a win. His superb start has come against the following teams: CHW, SEA, BAL, KC (2) and DET. Judge for thyself.

Bud Norris – 7.2 IP, 3 H, 11:3…He is the NL Morrow, but he is still trying to harness his wildness. When he does you know about it. This is one of those times as he completely shut down the Brew Crew.

Felix Hernandez – 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 10:1…Fantastic, but since he’s an M’s pitcher it wasn’t good enough. Shame, but he’ll be a Yankee sooner than you think.

Ubaldo Jimenez – 4 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 6:4…Good Limey! One step forward, two steps back. Must be dating Paula Abdul.

Ricky Nolasco – 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5:1…Is this the year? Owners hope so. Now (3-0) with a 3.35 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.

Carl Pavano – 5.1 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 0:0…That’s gonna leave a mark.

Dustin Moseley – 7 IP, 3 H, 6:2…Padre’s pitcher getting it done – in another spacious park. ERA and WHIP at 1.63 and 1.03 respectively after six starts.

Zach Britton – 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 1:3…Not awesome, but you don’t have to be when you face the ChiSox this year.

Chris Young – 7 IP, 2 H, 7:3…Besides his first start off the DL, Too Tall Young has looked pretty darn good. Take a flier. Go ahead. Mets pitchers need lovin’ too.

Be sure to keep a look out for my April recaps of the “September Star” series.
