05.06.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Still trying to process how Cliff Lee can strike out 16 and lose, oh that’s right the Phil’s bats went back to sleep and they hate facing Derek Lowe who took a no-no into the 7th.

Here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Andre Ethier
– 3/5… The Streak is now at 30!

Ryan Howard – 0/4 3 Ks… 3 for his last 24 since the Grand Slam

Chipper Jones – 2/5, R, RBI… Larry’s 24th RBI, 5th in the NL.

Jay Bruce – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI… Bruce’s 7th on the year, 2nd in as many days…could be going on a tear.

Jason Bourgeois – 3/5, R, SB… The Astros’ new lead off hitter is on a tear – 6 game hitting streak which includes 4 multi hit games and SBs in 5 of 6 games.  He better be on your radar by now if not in your lineup, now batting .412 with 12 sb!

Hunter Pence – 2/4, R, 2 RBI… Pence now batting .300 with 10 2B and 27 RBI… but when will some of these doubles start to leave the park (none the past 9 games)?

Derrek Lee – 1/3, R, HR, RBI, BB… Lee’s 3rd HR but it’s his 2nd this week – Lee is starting to show signs of life that Killboy was looking for as a sleeper candidate.

Adam Lind – 2/5, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR… Lind now batting .317 with 7 HR, 11 game hitting streak which includes 6 HR!  He is en fuego.

Jose Reyes – 3/4, 2 R, BB, SB… Joe King continues his quest to play his way out of Queens.

Adrián González – 1/4, 1 R, RBI, HR… 3rd HR, 2nd this week.    Primed to really break out as they expected him to in Beantown.

Curtis Granderson – 2/4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 HR, BB… The Grandy Man can…fill up the box score!  9th and 10th HR.  I’m Really regretting making him a throw in in an off season trade now.

Eric Hosmer – 0/2, 2 BB, SB… One of the most anticipated debuts of the year.  2 walks is a nice sign even if they were against Gio.

Albert Pujols – 1/3, 3 RBI…Albert now up to 22 RBI, it’s been a slow build in 2011 but did anyone really doubt El Hombre?

Matt Holliday – 1/4, RBI… Holliday’s hitting steak is at 12 and he’s hit in all but 2 games this year.  Still batting .410.  Stud.

The Arms:
Cliff Lee
– L, 7 IP, 9H, 3 ER, 16:1… Lee racked enough Ks for 3 starts but the Phillies fell under the spell of Derek Lowe.  Lee has deserved so much better so far this year (2.06 FIP, 2.14 xFIP).

Derek Lowe – W, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4:1… Lowe continued his mastery of the Phillies and “out dueled” Lee as you’re likely to read over your cheerios, but not sure how you can out duel someone when they K 4x more guys than you.

Edinson Volquez – W, 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3:4… The guy just isn’t that good (yet?).  I’d want no part of him on my team, can’t be trusted.

Matt Garza – L, 6 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 7:2, 1 HR… The K’s were there again as usual but the Bruce HR was a back breaker, otherwise he “out dueled” Volquez.

James Shields – W, 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5:3, 1 HR… Big Game is now 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA.  Last year he was one of the more unlucky guys, but he’s a great sell high candidate right now as his FIP and xFIP are well over a run higher making him one of the luckier guys so far this year.

Scott Baker – W, 8 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 8:1… One of our favorite Spot Starters pitched another excellent game.  This guy needs to be owned in way more leagues, he has shown he is legit.

Ricky Nolasco – ND, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 11:2… Nolasco certainly pitched well enough to win, but Zimmermann did as well.

Mariano Rivera – S, 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2:0… Mo’s 12th save.  5th straight save since the 2 blown.  He’s the greatest closer ever for a reason.

Gio Gonzalez – W, 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6:4… Continues his walk-a-thon (including 2 to Hosmer) but this time limited the hits.

Jaime Garcia – W, CG, 9 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 8:1… Perhaps the performance of the night as Garcia was perfect through 7 1/3.  His ERA is now at a ridiculous 1.99.  His peripherals aren’t far behind either.  The Cards needed guys to step up and Garcia has answered the call.

Matt Stauffer – ND, 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 6:1… Our other favorite Spot Starter pick up turns in a very solid performance but gets the ND as Heath Blew single handily blew it in the 9th.

Felix Hernandez – W, CG, 9 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6:2, HR… King Felix hung in there to earn his 4th win.
