Welcome to the Saturday edition of Spot Starting. Some familiar names from previous posts going Sunday, let’s see who’s worth a gamble.
Spot starting will return on Monday for Tuesday’s game picks.
For games on Sunday May 8th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
Johnny Cueto 42% / (CIN) @ ChC
Kyle McClellan 39% / (StL) vs. MIL
Carl Pavano 34% / (MIN) @ BOS
Anibal Sanchez 34% / (FLA) vs. WAS
Wade Davis 24% / (TB) @ BAL
Fausto Carmona 19% / (CLE) @ LAA
Chris Narveson 19% / (MIL) @ StL
Daisuke Matsuzaka 19% / (BOS) vs. MIN
My Pick: Fausto Carmona @ Angels
Alternate: Anibal Sanchez vs. Nationals
Deep League Special: none
A lot of household names to be sure, but still not great pickings. Cueto is making his first start of the season – and he wasn’t sharp in his rehab – can’t recommend him yet. As we said after his last start, the McClellan & Narveson experiments are over as they’ve been awful recently. Same for Pavano – absolutely dreadful lately. Dice-K also can’t be trusted especially coming off the relief appearance and injury concerns. That leaves us Sanchez, Davis and Carmona among viable starters. Davis is out based on his poor walk rate.
So my pick is Fausto Carmona. Carmona is coming off his best start of the season and has excellent career numbers against the Angels (forget the 0-3 record) including a good start last month he deserved to win. The Angels offense still hasn’t put it all together and can be shut down.
Sanchez against the Nats is another possibility but his walks could kill your WHIP for the week.
Results from Friday 05.06.11:
Matt Stauffer ND, 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB… Stauffer deserved the W, but his closer blew it.
Scott Baker W, 8 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 1 BB… Baker pitched another excellent game and was rewarded with the W.
Season Results (my pick only):
107 IP, 6-4, 97 H, 40 ER, 91 K, 33 BB, 3.36 ERA, 1.21 WHIP
