Fantasy MLB Spot Starting: 05.11.11

Welcome back to Spot Starting.

For games on Wednesday May 11th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Randy Wolf 45% / 61% (MIL) vs. SD

Tim Stauffer 40% / 10% (SD) @ MIL

John Lackey 36% / 21% (BOS) @ TOR

Scott Baker  34% /  19% (MIN) vs. DET

Matt Harrison 30% / 17% (TEX) vs. OAK

Bruce Chen 12% / 8% (KC) @ NYY

Jonathon Niese 9% / 1% (NYM) @ COL

Jake Westbrook 3% /2% (StL) @ ChC

My Pick: Tim Stauffer @ Brewers

Alternate: Scott Baker vs. Tigers

Deep League Special: Jake Westbrook

Stauffer is the easy pick for tomorrow.  He has an excellent 3.44 K/BB ratio and hasn’t given up more than 2 ER in 6 of 7 starts.  He is striking out more than one batter per inning over his last 3 starts and has had tremendous numbers on the road this year.  What’s better, his peripherals are right in line 2.61 ERA, 2.48 FIP, 2.99 xFIP, .299 BABIP.  If he can keep his walks down he belongs on your team in almost any format.

Baker is always a good play off  the waiver wire and has become a go to in this column.  He’s edged out by Stauffer because I’m a little bit concerned about his career splits against the Tigers top sluggers (Ordonez .469/.480/.714, Cabrera .321/.286/.571, Jackson .625/.667/1.125 in 8 ABs).  If he keeps those 3 in check he should be able to continue his recent success.

Westbrook is coming off a 6.1 IP, 8K, 0 BB quality start vs. Florida and he has good decent numbers vs. the Cubbies in a small sample 2-0, .244 BAA (all from 2010).

Results tomorrow from 05.10.11:

Season Results (my pick only):

6-5, 121 IP, 112 H, 43 ER, 107 K, 36 BB, 3.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP
