Welcome back to Spot Starting. Let’s see if we can find a Jason for our Friday the 13th spot start and not a victim.
For games on Friday May 13th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
Carl Pavano 28% / 8% (MIN) vs. TOR
Bartolo Colon 28% / 27% (NYY) vs. BOS
Fausto Carmona 26% /25 % (CLE) vs. SEA
Jeremy Guthrie 24% / 9% (BAL) @ TB
Tom Gorzelanny 14% / 8% (WAS) vs. FLA
Brandon McCarthy 14% / 10% (OAK) vs CWS
Phil Humber 10% / 7% (CWS) @ OAK
My Pick: Fausto Carmona vs Mariners
Alternate: Tom Gorzellany vs. Marlins
Deep League Special: Brandon McCarthy vs. White Sox
Not super great pickings but there is some depth if you look deep into the numbers today. Carmona is the front line choice especially against a terrible Mariners team. He’s given up only 3 ER in his last 22 IP while posting a 14:4 K/BB. His career numbers against the Mariners are pretty good and besides the 2 losses last year were very good (1.93 ERA). The Indians are a different team this year so I see Carmona picking up the win.
Gorzellany may seem an odd choice, but the journeyman has owned the Marlins in 3 career starts (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, .179 BAA). He is also eligible at RP so he allows you to sneak him into your lineup to pick up an extra start.
McCarthy‘s name will be familiar to our loyal readers going back to early in the season. He’s done well as a Deep League Special before and I believe will again tomorrow. He’s 6th in the majors in BB/9 and 3rd in HR/9 putting him amongst the elite stud SPs in the game. He’s become a ground ball pitcher so his .321 BABIP will adjust itself. His 2.48 FIP also says he’s been unlucky but his xFIP and tERA suggest he’s right about on track.
Humber is a name we’ve mentioned before and he belongs on your radar as he is sticking as the 6th man for the White Sox for the next month.
Results from 05.11.11:
Tim Stauffer – W, 5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, 2 HR… A rough outing for Stauffer, by far his worst of the year as he blew a 5-0 lead. He did manage to avoid the Loss when the Pads stormed back for 8 in the 8th and picked up 7 Ks.
Season Results (my pick only):
7-5, 133.1 IP, 126 H, 49 ER, 119 K, 38 BB, 3.31 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
