2011 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Gems: American League

This week on Waiver Wire Gems – American League:

Bartolo Colon, SP New York Yankees (28% owned in Yahoo, 26% ESPN)

Current Stat Line: 2 W / 1 L / 33 K / 3.86 ERA / 1.23 WHIP

Ok. His last start was rough, but when I read about his stem cell procedure on his shoulder and elbow it made me think of the six million dollar man. So how could I in good conscience pull Steve Austin off of the list???!! In all honesty, shoot for Carmona as one of my readers previously suggested.

Projection: 12 W/ 8 L / 155 K / 3.95 ERA / 1.30 WHIP

Fausto Carmona, SP Cleveland (31% owned in Yahoo, 39% ESPN)

Current Stat Line: 3 W / 3 L / 3.83 ERA / 35 K / 1.20 WHIP

Pull out the terrible first game against the White Sox and this guys numbers start looking a lot more ace like. 2-0 in his last 3 starts with 3 earned runs in 22 innings. Pretty compelling stuff.

Projection: 14 W/ 8 L / 3.75 ERA / 145 K / 1.15 WHIP

Julio Borbon, OF Texas Rangers (8% owned in Yahoo, 27% ESPN)

Current Stat Line: .279 AVG / 10 R / 0 HR / 11 RBI / 6 SB

Borbon has been getting a look as the lead off guy in Texas. With his speed on the base paths he becomes a lot more interesting if he gets consistent time at the top of the order.

Projection: .285 / 70 R / 4 HR / 45 RBI / 25 SB

Mark Trumbo, 1B LA Angels (19% owned in Yahoo, 27% ESPN)

Current Stat Line: .263 AVG / 14 R / 6 HR / 17 RBI / 2 SB

With the news that Morales will be out for the year, Trumbo’s stock rises. Continued and consistent playing time should result in solid stats from Trumbo if you are in a pinch at first base.

Projection: .265 AVG / 65 R / 22 HR / 65 RBI / 5 SB

Austin Jackson, OF Detroit Tigers (35% owned in Yahoo, 40% ESPN)

Current Stat Line: .227 AVG / 16 R / 2 HR / 12 RBI / 4 SB

His current stats don’t look to impressive, but 10 games ago he had a .188 batting average and he’s currently riding a 6 game hit streak. If you need someone short-term for your outfield who could potentially provide stats in all categories, Jackson might be your guy.

Projection: .280 AVG / 85 R / 6 HR / 50 RBI / 14 SB
