Fantasy MLB Spot Starting: 05.17.11

Welcome to another week of Spot StartingEvery week of picks should start off this easy as you’ll see below.

For games on Tuesday May 17th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Jordan Zimmermann 49% / 51% (WAS) vs. PIT

Tim Stauffer 39% / 7% (SD) @ ARI

John Lackey 30% / 16% (BOS) vs. BAL

Randy Wolf 28% / 26% (MIL) @ LAD

Matt Harrison 26% / 13% (TEX) @ CWS

Rick Porcello 10% / 11% (DET) vs. TOR

Charlie Morton 8% / 8% (PIT) @ WAS

My Pick: Jordan Zimmermann vs. Pirates

Alternate:  Tim Stauffer @ DBacks

Deep League Special: Matt Harrison @ White Sox

Wow, this is way too easy today.  Two of my favorite waiver wire pickups of the season starting against terrible offenses, it’s like fish in a barrel.  I really can’t believe Zimmermann is this available, if he is in your league you should be falling over yourself to pick him up for this start and the the foreseeable future.  Read Killboy’s article and mine for more Zimmermannnnnnnn love.

Stauffer is another guy I really like this season and have on my team (which means he’s headed for the DL!).  He got hit around in his last start which means he’s even more likely to be on your waiver wire but that was just a bump in the road – he’s been very consistent this year and has great lifetime splits against the D Backs (26.1 IP, 23K, 1.35 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, .253 BAA).

Harrison is on a personal 4 game losing streak making him very available in all leagues.  I like him to break it and pick up a W against the poor White Sox.  In his only other career start at US Cellular he threw a CG SHO.

Results from 05.14.11:

Anibal Sanchez -W, 8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K, 2 BB… A fantastic start by Sanchez, probably our best pick result of the season and hopefully helped you win your match up.

Results from 05.15.11:

Mark Buehrle -W, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 HR… A pedestrian line (Quality Start – one of the worst stats in sports) but a win is a win and a K/IP is nice.

Season Results (my pick only):

8-5, 155.1 IP, 142 H, 56 ER, 136 K, 45 BB, 3.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
