05.16.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Great night in baseball as I had Tommy Hanson and Colby Lewis put Jesse into an early pitching hole on the first day of the week. Nice!

Anyway, onto it…

4th and Home Player of the Day:Vin Mazzaro – 2.1 IP, 11 H, 14 ER, 2:3…Who else could it be? This is right out of a video game. His ERA ballooned from 4.50 to 22.74 after this one!

The Bats:
Matt Downs
– 2/3, R, HR, 2 RBI…Just about the only guy that could hit Hanson in this one.

Adrian Gonzalez – 3/5, R, 3 RBI…Guy keeps smoking the ball. Up to 37 RBI now to lead the majors.

Carlos Pena – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Just a bad year. With each decent game you think a hot streak is coming and then an 0-4. Let’s see how he does tomorrow.

Michael Brantley – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…Right after Killboy and I touted him to hit lead-off more often, he has a career game. Yes, MB should be the Tribe’s lead-off hitter from here on out. Oh and pick this guy up.

Asdrubal Cabrera – 2/6, 3 R, RBI, 2 SB…Very nice season from AsCab. He even has 5 steals this year.

Matt LaPorta – 4/4, R, 4 RBI…Yes, he’s still alive.

Seth Smith – 1/3, R, HR, RBI, SB…BSFU!

Carlos Gonzalez – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI…Made his only hit count. Tons of walks in May and now 4 bombs. His team is approaching…

The Arms:
Jake Westbrook
– 7 IP, 4 H, ER, 1:3…Not a great line, but he out-dueled Cliff Lee so it was an awesome start for the Cards as they caught Lee on an off night.

Cliff Lee – 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4:6…Speaking of…Six walks…that’s like more than he had in 2010!

Max Scherzer – 7 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 2:1…His Ks have really dropped off the past two games, but owners will take this line. WHIP is still high so I think Max is a nice buy right now.

Tommy Hanson – 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 10:1…Hanson is now in SP1 territory after this start; not like we didn’t know it would happen this year. Hanson continues to dominate, but much like you saw from his rookie campaign you do hope he can work deeper into games as he gains experience. Good thing the Braves have an awesome set-up man and closer.

Chris Tillman – 5 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 2:3…Held the Sawx bats in check. His best days are ahead of him, but the overall line for 2011 still looks terrible.

Josh Tomlin – 6 IP, 5 H, ER, 1:0…Not a flashy line, but he got the job done. And he had a lot of run support in this one (19 runs).

Colby Lewis – SHO, 5 H, 7:1…Check the game log. He is heating up. If an owner in your league doesn’t know, float him (or her) an offer.
