Fantasy MLB Spot Starting: 05.18.11

Welcome back to Spot Starting.  A real motley crew on the waiver wire going on Wednesday.   Guys we’re used to seeing in this slot  such as Bud Norris have found their way onto more lineups but we will persevere.

For games on Wednesday May 18th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Bartolo Colon 26% / % (NYY) @ BAL

Carl Pavano 25% / % (MIN) @ OAK

Jeremy Guthrie 21% / % (BAL) vs. NYY

Tom Gorzelanny 15% / % (WAS) @ NYM

Brandon McCarthy 13% / % (OAK) vs. MIN

Jason Vargas 5% / % (SEA) vs. LAA

Julio Teheran 4% / % (ATL) @ ARI

My Pick: Brandon McCarthy vs. Twins

Alternate: Jason Vargas vs. Angels

Deep League Special: Vargas

I haven’t picked McCarthy since he burned us back on April 26th which was his worst start of the year.  I’m ready to give him another chance especially against the woeful Twins against whom he sports a 1.63 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, .223 BAA line.  Brandon’s 2.42 FIP is almost a full run below his 3.34 ERA.  If he can keep up his excellent GB% he should be just fine.

Vargas is coming off his best start of the year a 9IP 0ER 4:1 in which he got a ND.  Vargas’ name came up as one to Buy Low on in my Casual Sabermetrician article about tERA vs. ERA.  He’s always pitched well against the Angels – 44 IP, 29Ks 2.45 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, .215 BAA.

I’m off the Colon bandwagon for now until he can show sustained performance, he may have peaked a couple starts ago and now has some distractions with the controversial medical procedure talk swirling.

Results tomorrow for 05.16.11:

Season Results (my pick only):

8-5, 155.1 IP, 142 H, 56 ER, 136 K, 45 BB, 3.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP

I like all of the available except Guthrie and Vargas. I think Gorz has a chance to toss a gem.
