Welcome back to Spot Starting as we head into the first Interleague games of the season including some Natural Rivalries like Mets-Yankees, Giants-A’s, Nats-O’s and Marlins-Rays and perhaps most exciting: Cubs at Red Sox for the first time since 1918.
For games on Saturday May 21st these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
Brett Myers 49% / 41% (HOU) @ TOR
Scott Baker 32% / 12% (MIN) @ ARI
Kevin Correia 28% / 22% (PIT) vs. DET
Javier Vazquez 25% / 2% (FLA) vs. TB
Jeremy Guthrie 21% / 8% (BAL) vs. WAS
Joel Pineiro 20% / 42% (LAA) vs. ATL
Clayton Richard 18% / 1% (SD) vs. SEA
Mark Buehrle 14% / 10% (CWS) vs. LAD
Jon Garland 10% / 5% (LAD) @ CWS
My Pick: Jeremy Guthrie vs. Nats
Alternate: Scott Baker vs. D Backs
Deep League Special: Guthrie

Lots of depth and familiar names but no stellar matchups jump out. Homer Bailey is still somehow available in over 50% of Yahoo leagues but is 70% owned in ESPN so I left him out to be fair to our intended concept here. But if he is available you should get him, but maybe not for this start against the Indians who he has not fared well against.
Guthrie hasn’t won since April 1st but has shown signs of coming around and has good numbers lifetime against the Nats (39 IP, 25 K, 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .187 BAA). I don’t like him past this start however, due to his 5.11 tERA, mediocre K rate and extreme FB tendency.
Old reliable Scott Baker is another option. He’s been giving up some homeruns of late which is a concern at Chase Field but he’s also striking out almost 9/9IP and the DBacks will strike out a lot.
Results from 05.18.11:
Brandon McCarthy – ND, 7 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB…A disappointing line from McCarthy. Where did the K’s go?? But at least he didn’t walk anybody as he continues to exhibit excellent control – only 10 BB in 63.2 IP this year.
Results from 05.19.11:
Chris Narveson – ND, 7.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 4 K, 1 BB… Narveson couldn’t really do much more except maybe hit a home run but his team’s offense stinks so he got a ND in a 1-0 loss.
Season Results (my pick only):
27 GS, 8-5, 166.2 IP, 155 H, 59 ER, 141 K, 46 BB, 3.13 ERA, 1.18 WHIP
