05.25.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Funerals are never fun and being out-of-town made it hard to keep you all up to date with my opinions on the daily box scores. So as I get back into it, drooling as Matt Joyce went yard AGAIN the other night, this is what I saw LAST night…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Wilson Valdez (PHI 2B) – 3/6…Decent game at the plate filling in for Chase Utley. But, he entered in the 19th to pick up the win as he pitched one inning of scoreless ball! Player of the Day!

The Bats:
Steve Pearce
– 3/5, R, HR, 2 RBI…The once-touted Pirate prospect is seeing some time now that Pedro Alvarez is on the DL. Ship has sailed.

Dan Uggla – 0/5, 3 K…Now batting .180. Ouch. Actually…OUCH! Most of you had high hopes for him this year and this is not looking pretty.

Dustin Pedroia – 2/6, R, HR, 3 RBI…Guess he wasn’t too hurt.

Carl Crawford – 4/4, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI…Average sits at .229. He’s coming along, but maybe won’t be the No. 1 OF I expected pre-season.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…I expcted better from him this year, but I think the Braves traded the correct backstop despite the “experts'” opinions on the matter.

Prince Fielder – 2/2, 4 RBI…Been a rough May, so maybe this gets him out of the funk.

Mike Morse – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI…Ok, he now has HR in three straight.

Matt Kemp – 3/4, R, HR, RBI…Dodger Blue’s only offense on the day. Kemp hit his 12th HR to tie Braun and Bruce for the league lead (temporarily).

Andruw Jones – 3/3, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…Doubled his HR total in one game!

Franklin Gutierrez – 2/3, 2 R, HR, RBI…He’s baaaaaaa-aaaaack.

Alex Gordon – 1/5, 4 K…Honeymoon is over. You should’ve traded him in April.

Jay Bruce – 3/8, R, HR, 3 RBI…Your NL HR Leader with 13!

Mike Stanton – 4/6, 4 RBI…Has his batting average all the way up to .274 after a .306 May.

The Arms:
Jon Lester
– 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 7:1…Shut the major’s best team DOWN!

Zack Greinke – 7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 10:1…Back on track. Even went yard himself!

Ted Lilly – 6 IP, 6 H, ER, 2:1…Diminished velocity, less K. Ugh. To think I had him pretty darn high on my cheat sheet heading into this season.

Mat Latos – 8 IP, 6 H, ER, 7:0…There’s the Latos we all love!

Chris Carpenter – CG, 8 H, 2 ER, 6:0…This guy can’t buy a win. Must be hanging out with John Danks. Carp is now (1-5) with a 4.58 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. His xFIP was 3.50 coming into this one. Hang in there!

Erik Bedard – 6 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 4:1…Chris took my advice on this guy and Bedard beat me today. Sonuva!

C.J. Wilson – 6.1 IP, 5 H, ER, 5:0…I was targeting him this year, but Jesse snagged him a round or two earlier than I wanted to reach. Paying off so far.

Gavin Floyd – 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 5:1…This guy gets no love. Solid most nights, he is now (5-4) with a 3.61/1.08.

Jake Arrieta – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 7:3…Now (6-2) if you can believe it. Still getting crushed at home. Not a good sign.

Ian Kennedy – 8 IP, 7 H, ER, 3:2…Not a great line, but he keeps on winning. Now (6-1) with a 3.01/1.04.

Jason Hammel – 7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 5:2…Did you know: Hammel is sporting a 3.20/1.27? Calling deep leaguers!

Ervin Santana – 6 IP, 6 H, ER, 6:2…B2B great starts.
