Welcome back to Spot Starting. We’re starting to see some new names show up on the list of readily available starters as teams are starting to call up prospects or are dipping into their 6th/7th men to fill injuries. The rookies of course, make for much more fashionable pickups than the ole journeyman but are they really your best bet, let’s take a look.
For games on Friday June 3rd these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
Bronson Arroyo 38% / 40% (CIN) vs. LAD
Josh Collmenter 26% / 21% (ARI) vs. WAS
Randy Wolf 24% / 24% (MIL) @ FLA
Carl Pavano 22% / 6% (MIN) @ KC
Mark Buehrle 17% / 12% (CWS) vs. DET
Jonathon Niese 11% / 3% (NYM) vs. ATL
Danny Duffy 3% / 1% (KC) vs. MIN
Josh Outman 2% / 1% (OAK) @ BOS
My Pick: Josh Collmenter vs. Nats
Alternate: Mark Buehrle vs. Tigers
Deep League Special: Danny Duffy vs. Twins

Arroyo has been absolutely brutal over his last 3 starts and he doesn’t have great numbers against the Dodgers. Wolf has put together back to back good starts but has horrible career numbers in Miami. Pavano has been hideous all year. That leaves us with the kids…
Collmenter made the DBacks out of spring in their bullpen and now has worked his way into the rotation and onto over 20% of fantasy teams. He has an impressive 21:4 K/BB ratio (5:1 his last start) which belies his Minor League numbers, but we’ll take it for as long as we can get. The Nationals are 3rd in the Majors in K’s so that bodes well for young Mr. Collmenter.
In deep leagues I like Duffy, another big time strikeout guy who has 8.22K/9 in his first 3 big league starts and was well over 10/9 in his minor league career.
Season Results (my pick only):
28 GS, 10-5, 176.2 IP, 160 H, 61 ER, 145 K, 47 BB, 3.11 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
