Seth Smith, OF Colorado Rockies ( 39 Percent owned in Yahoo, 66 percent in ESPN)
Current Stat Line- .315 AVG / 36 R / 8 HR / 33 RBI / 3 SB
We should rename this post, “Seth Smith and Four Other NL Waiver Wire Gems.” I have been putting Smith’s name up here every other week yet he gets no respect. His .396 wOBA ranks 13th in all of baseball just behind Votto, Braun, Granderson, and Upton (the good one). His .919 OPS ranks him 12th in the MLB.
Projection (rest of season)- .292 AVG / 39 R / 10 HR / 42 RBI / 3 SB
Freddie Freeman, 1B Atlanta Braves ( 27 Percent owned in Yahoo, 39.7 percent in ESPN)
Current Stat Line- .273 AVG / 31 R / 8 HR / 30 RBI / 2 SB
Freddie Freeman is still hitting fifth in the Atlanta lineup and he has increased his RBI total every month (April – 8, May – 9, June – 13). He probably won’t be much of a home run threat going forward but he should be a solid contributor in RBI. He needs to show more plate discipline because his BB/9 is 0.35 and he seems to be going the opposite way in this area.
Projection (rest of season)– .270 AVG / 35 R / 9 HR / 37 RBI / 2 SB
Ty Wigginton, 1B/2B/3B/OF Colorado Rockies ( 40 Percent owned in Yahoo, 61.9 percent in ESPN)
Current Stat Line- .267 AVG / 27 R / 10 HR / 30 RBI / 4 SB
I try not to use the same player in this post two weeks in a row but, in Wiggy’s case I will make an exception. In the six games after I mentioned him last, he has hit 4 HR and 7 RBI. Ty Wigginton is a great player to own in daily leagues. He is eligible at four positions, plays on the west coast, bats fifth in a good lineup and has a good track record.
Projection (rest of season)– .260 AVG / 32 R / 9 HR / 36 RBI / 2 SB
Roger Bernadina, OF Washington Nationals ( 13 Percent owned in Yahoo, 40.7 percent in ESPN)
Current Stat Line- .287 AVG / 20 R / 4 HR / 16 RBI / 11 SB
Bernadina has been hot lately. Since June 14th, he has put up a slick line of, .400 AVG / 6 R / 3 HR / 8 RBI / 2 SB. He has been hitting second in the lineup for most games recently so he should be a good source of runs and stolen bases going forward. Those of you in deep leagues should give him a shot.
Projection (rest of season)– .259 AVG / 32 R / 5 HR / 20 RBI / 11 SB
Brandon Beachy, SP Atlanta Braves ( 46 Percent owned in Yahoo, 67.6 percent in ESPN)
Current Stat Line- 2 W / 1 L / 57 K / 3.22 ERA / 1.07 WHIP
Beachy should be universally owned, even his 67.6 ESPN ownership is a joke. His injury may have actually played a part in his low ownership level but, the injury may actually work to your advantage. Since he missed over a month, savvy owners will know it’s unlikely he will be on low innings cap going forward. His K/9 (10.19) and BB/9 (2.5) are elite. He faces Seattle tomorrow, so pitch a low-ball offer or pick him up while you can.
Projection (rest of season)– 8 W / 4 L / 90 K / 3.60 ERA / 1.20 WHIP
