Fantasy MLB Spot Starting: 07.21.11

Welcome back to Spot Starting.

For games on Friday July 22nd these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Gavin Floyd 48% / 28% (CWS) @ CLE

Phil Hughes 45% / 41% (NYY) vs. OAK

Carlos Zambrano 43% / 18% (ChC) vs. HOU

Cory Luebke 37% / 53% (SD) @ PHL

Bronson Arroyo 31% / 33% (CIN) vs. ATL

Carlos Carrasco 30% / 18% (CLE) vs. CWS

John Lackey 21% / 11% (BOS) vs. SEA

Paul Maholm 20% / 17% (PIT) vs. StL

My Pick: Carlos Zambrano vs. Astros

Alternate: Paul Maholm vs. Cardinals

Deep League Special: none

Zambrano is maddeningly inconsistant, you pick him up after a gem, then he allows 7 ER and walks 7.  So you drop him only to watch him pitch well on the waiver wire.  Well you can pretty safely pick him up because he owns the Astros.  In 31 Career GS/33 G, he sports a 2.72/1.12/.198 line with 183K in 212 IP.  That’s no small sample size, that’s a full seasons worth.  And he did it to them on May 31st of this year 8IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 7:0.

Maholm has pitched respectably against the Cardinals in 13 career GS, but he has pitched outstanding at home this year: 1.93/1.10/.206.

Results from Wednesday 07.20.11:

Derek Holland @ Angels…ND, 5.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 4 K, 3 BB…I really should have seen this coming as Holland’s lucky streak had to come to an end since he’s been so inconsistent.  Also doesn’t help that I had picked him up for my own team which is always the kiss of death.

Season Results (my pick only):

48 GS, 22-8, 305.1 IP, 271 H, 101 ER, 227 K, 80 BB, 2.98 ERA, 1.15 WHIP
