Welcome back to Spot Starting. For the second straight day we are faced with a slew of poor match ups, but we march on and dig deeper.
For games on Wednesday July 27th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
John Danks 48% / 42% (CWS) vs. DET
Carlos Zambrano 42% / 17% (ChC) @ MIL
Phil Hughes 41% / 32% (NYY) vs. SEA
Cory Luebke 38% / 52% (SD) vs. ARI
Javier Vazquez 33% / 9% (FLA) @ WAS
Bronson Arroyo 30% / 31% (CIN) vs. NYM
John Lackey 24% / 17% (BOS) vs. KC
Paul Maholm 17% / 11% (PIT) @ ATL
Barry Zito 11% / 4% (SF) @ PHL
Livan Hernandez 5% / 2% (WAS) vs. FLA
My Pick: Paul Maholm @ Braves
Alternate: Barry Zito @ Phillies
Deep League Special: Livan Hernandez vs. Marlins
Maholm has good lifetime numbers against the Braves though I’m fairly certain a lot of luck has been involved as he’s allowed a lot of base runners to them. Not too many current Braves have had much luck against Maholm, so I am selecting him in these slimmest of pickings.
As a Phillies fan I have a feeling of dread whenever they face a lefty. Though several Phils have good numbers against Zito, I still have a bad feeling. If Charlie is smart he’ll bench Howard and Ibanez. Too bad Polonco is on the DL as he is a ridiculous 12/16 off Zito for his career, that’s remarkable.
Also of note, our old friend Bud Norris has slipped to 50% in Yahoo and 48% in ESPN leagues which is just outside our stated rule for this article (key words: less than 50%). He has pitched very well for his career against the Cards. He would be my overwhelming pick, but I shall play by the rules.
Season Results (my pick only):
51 GS, 24-9, 324.1 IP, 291 H, 109 ER, 241 K, 82 BB, 3.02 ERA, 1.15 WHIP
