Welcome back to Box Score Breakdown. Again today, I’ll be guesting for Mike. Quite a weekend of baseball. The Phillies took 3 of 4 from the Giants in an NLCS rematch/possible preview but had their win streak snapped at 9. The Pirates continue to slide out of the playoff race as their losing streak reaches 10, what a nightmare. The Yanks and Red Sox also gave us a taste of October with a great match up and great back drop to write this to.
4th and Home Player of the Day: Prince Fielder 3/4, 4 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB. Prince gonna get paid. .304/26/85. Brewers 3 up on the Cards.
Albert Pujols – 2/4, 3 R, RBI, HR, BB…Homers in 3 of his last 4 games, now at 27 and batting .282. Amazingly has re-entered MVP talk if he can get the Cardinals the Division title.
Matt Holliday – 2/4, 1 R, 3 RBI, BB…Along with Berkman, just an awesome 3,4,5 punch. Back to back multi-hit games raises his avg to .318. 10 hits and 10 rbi this week.
Drew Stubbs – 2/3, 2 R, RBI, BB, HR, SB…BSFU! Snaps out of a mini slump
Marlon Byrd – 3/3, R, 2 RBI, BB…Avg back up to .310 – but where is the power? Cubs are just playing out the string – there’s always next year Chicago.
Logan Morrison – 1/4…Writing not about the 1/4 but to say, is this all? Morrison is starting to become a real disappointment. He’ll have quick short bursts of power then zzz through a week like this one.
Jason Heyward – 1/2, 2 R, 1 RBI, HR, BB…Speaking of disappointments…Heyward was benched for the last 2 games and responded by crushing a home run in his first AB. He went on a tear to end 2010 and his graphs are trending that way again.
Jose Constanza – 2/3, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB, SB…BSFU! Has now hit in 8 of his first 9 MLB games including 7 in a row. If you saw this coming from the 27 year old rookie, go you! He also took out Met’s Daniel Murphy on a hard SB slide, possibly ending his season.
Dan Uggla – 1/5…Continues the ugliest (pun unintentional) hitting streak in recent memory. Has raised his average 42 points….to .220!!
Jose Reyes – 0/1…Left game for the hospital with yet another hamstring injury. MRI expected tomorrow, but he missed 12 games in July with his last one. If the Mets had the faintest of playoff hopes before today, they have zero now.
Jason Bay – 3/3, 3 R, 2 BB, SB…On base all 5 times up, almost all to lead off innings so no BSFU.
Will Venable – 3/5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB…Nice game for Venable but nothing to get excited about as he is in a 3 way platoon on a bad Padres team.
Brett Lawrie – 2/4, 2 R, RBI, HR… Lawrie’s first MLB HR…right on cue Killboy!
Hideki Matsui – 1/5, R, 2 RBI, HR… Killboy! 4th and Home continues to deliver the goods.
Desmond Jennings – 3/5, RBI…more BSFUs will come.
Johnny Giavotella – 2/4, 2R, RBI, HR, 2B…Another day, another new hitting prospect in and producing for the Royals. Watch out AL Central. Hits in his first 3 MLB games and a tidy 1.409 OPS. Nice new wave of young 2B in the AL with Ackley and Lawrie.
Mark Reynolds – 2/4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 HR…On my bench – yours too? That’s the problem with the all or nothing guys. 5 HR in his last 10 games. The 2nd one was 450 feet, upper deck in left center – absolutely destroyed. 2nd longest by an Oriole in Camden Yards history.
Jeff Keppinger – 4/4, RBI…nothing to see here, move along.
Ricky Romero – W/8/4/2/5:0…Besides the 2 bombs hit by Reynolds, Romero was untouchable.
Mike Minor – ND/5.2/7/4/5:2…A rough return to the rotation for Minor. Braves will need better than this to keep ahead in the WC race.
Mat Latos – W/7/4/2/7:1…Latos finally has a win to show for his efforts. 32 Ks in his last 32 IP. Predicted.
Zach Greinke – W/7/4/1/6:3…Six straight starts with 2 or fewer ER, but yet the ERA is still above 4. 10 wins and hitting his stride. Though would have expected more Ks against the Astros AAA lineup (Brewer bullpen tacked on 5 Ks in 2 IP).
Jake Peavy – W/8/3/0/6:0…Peavy would have made for a very fine Spot Start. A masterful performance. Only 108 pitches – come on Ozzie, let him finish it.
Felix Hernandez – L/CG/8/4/2/12:0…Take heart King Felix, you only have 39 months till you’re a free agent.
Ervin Santana – W/8.1/7/1/7:1…4th consecutive game of 1 or fewer ER including of course the No-hitter lowering his ERA over a run his last 10 starts.
Roy Oswalt – L/6/12/3/4:2…In what was very much his 3rd rehab start, Little Roy worked on getting back in game shape for the stretch run which is where the Phils will need him. Might yet help those of us who have stuck with him this year.
Tim Lincecum – W/7.2/7/1/5:1…Timmay had the Phils number. ERA down to 2.69 and 10 wins.
Mike will return tomorrow…as will Spot Starting
Coming soon…the July Review of my September Stars Series…
