Welcome back to Spot Starting. Sorry for the minor disruption in service as I covered for Mike in our flagship column Box Score Breakdown. We’re going insane here at Spot Starting, read below to see why.
For games on Tuesday August 10th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:
Derek Holland 47% / 43% (TEX) vs. SEA
Philip Humber 40% / 22% (CWS) @ BAL
Aaron Harang 34% / 18% (SD) @ NYM
Josh Collmenter 30% / 19% (ARI) vs. HOUS
Randy Wolf 24% / 17% (MIL) @ StL
Rick Porcello 22% / 25% (DET) @ CLE
Mike Leake 20% / 9% (CIN) vs. COL
Ivan Nova 20% / 40% (NYY) vs. LAA
My Pick: Derek Holland vs. Mariners
Alternate: Ivan Nova vs. Angels
Deep League Special: Nova

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Picking Holland after his last start seems insane. But he’s facing a horror show Mariners team that he CG SHO’d his last start against them. Since his hot streak began, he has not gotten shelled in back to back games, in fact he has bounced back with 0 ER each time.
By all accounts Nova is going to remain in the Yankees rotation because after CC, he’s been their best pitcher for weeks now. Only owned in 20% of Yahoo leagues? 10 Ks his last start and no walks. His walks were a concern before but he’s really cut back on them his last 3 starts.
Results from Wednesday 08.05.11:
Brett Cecil @ Rays– ND, 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 3 BB, 1 HR…The definition of pedestrian starts, yet somehow labeled as “quality”.
Results from Wednesday 08.05.11:
Derek Holland vs. Indians – ND, 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR…I warned you. He was either going to dominate or get shelled and he got shelled. There is no middle ground for this guy. Maybe he’s not worth the upside afterall.
PS – Our thoughts go out to Juan Nicasio (last Thursday’s Deep League Special) as he suffered the freakest of freak scary injuries when he was struck in the neck by a linedrive in his start last Friday. We’re pulling for you Juan.
Season Results (my pick only):
59 GS, 26-12, 362.1 IP, 340 H, 135 ER, 272 K, 99 BB, 3.35 ERA, 1.21 WHIP
