Fantasy MLB Spot Starting 08.12.11

Welcome back to Spot Starting.

For games on Saturday August 13th  these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Jake Peavy 41% / 35% (CWS) vs. KC

Derek Lowe  39% / 27% (ATL) vs. ChC

Kevin Correia 36% / 32% (PIT) @ MIL

Phil Hughes 35% / 22% (NYY) vs. TB

Javier Vazquez 35% / 13% (FLA) vs. SF

Homer Bailey 13% / 7% (CIN) vs. SD

Luke Hochevar 9% / 10% (KC) @ CWS

My Pick: Phil Hughes vs. Rays

Alternate: Javier Vazquez vs. Giants

Deep League Special: Luke Hochevar @ White Sox

Hughes is reportedly going to be sent to the bullpen after this start.  My gut says he’s going to have a statement game.  Phillies fans know this from Kyle Kendrick – every time it’s his “last start” he pitches the game of his life.

Vazquez has pitched surprisingly well his last 10 games – 3 or fewer ER in 9 of 10.  In his last 3 starts, the only ER he’s allowed has been on a solo homerun.  Respectable lifetime numbers against the Giants too.

Hochevar, the former #1 overall pick has won 4 straight decisions and is coming off 3 consecutive 7+ IP, 1-2 ER, 6-7 K performances.  You’ll take that all day, especially at only 9% owned.

Results from 08.11.11:

Jeff Niemann vs Royals – W, 6.1 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB…Niemann bent but he didn’t break against the young Royals.

Season Results (my pick only):

61 GS, 27-12, 374.2 IP, 356 H, 138 ER, 281 K, 106 BB, 3.32 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
