09.05.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Now that the Northeast is restored from Irene, perhaps 4th and Home can restore itself as a staple in your diet…

The 4th and Home regular season has ended and just 4 are headed to the playoffs. The final standing of the nuts you know:

Mike      16-5-1
Killboy   15-5-2
Eric       12-10-0
Jesse     10-11-1
Chris      9-11-2
Brian      8-14-0

So now I play Jesse in Round 1 and Killboy and Eric square off.

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day:Zach Stewart – 1-hit SHO/9:0…If you started him in this one, then you should be in Vegas.

The Bats:
Mike Morse – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…A .315/62/26/82/2 line through 2/3 of a season. I’ll never let go of the fact I dumped him in April.

Jesus Montero – 2/3, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…His first two longballs and a taste of 2012 for fans.

Mark Reynolds – 3/4, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, SB…BSFU and he continues to prove me right as a major sleeper this year while everyone was jumping on the Pedro Alvarez love train.

Dexter Fowler – 3/5, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…Batting .307 in the 2nd half and I could see him being a cheap source of stats come 2012.

Evan Longoria – 1/2, 2 R, HR, RBI, SB…A BSFU for Longoria who has been coming on strong of late.

Good show last night. Lots of good info for your stretch run, especially for playing the “Spot Starting Carousel.”

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: James Shields – 6-hit SHO/8:3…8 CGs and 11 wins. Who does he think he is, Roy Halladay?

The Bats:
Martin Prado – 4/6, R, HR, 3 RBI…More hits last night than he’s had all year (it seems).

Bobby Abreu – 2/5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…Tied it in the 6th and then won it in the 9th.

Josh Willingham – 1/3, R, HR, 2 RBI…On queue from Killboy on air last night, JWill homers.

Evan Longoria – 2/3, R, HR, 4 RBI…Was just thinking how much of a slump Longo’s in and then voila.

Justin Upton – 3/5, 3 R, HR, 4 RBI…First rounder next year? Could be…

Pretty light day for games, but enough action to warrant a post. I tell you, it was over 100 again here in the Northeast so it wasn’t easy! 103 tomorrow!

Onto it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: C.J. Wilson – CG/2/0/8:1…A CG loss. That sucks. Know what else sucks? Knowing he was going to have a great year and then having Jesse draft him right before you!

The Bats:
Cameron Maybin
– 4/5, 2 R, 2 SB…9/15 in this series, just one extra base hit but five stolen bases. I’ve been wanting to get excited by this guy since Opening Day 2007. Remember “Strobe Light Honey” by Black Sheep? Yeah, they wrote that song for guys like Maybin, not girls at the club.

Ichiro – 3/4, R, SB…Batting .265 and it’s safe to say the wheels have fallen off. Ichiro is waiver fodder if you ask me.

Jason Heyward – 2/5, R, HR, 3 RBI…J-Hey with another rare homer. I am hoping he’s not falling into the “what if” category, but color me concerned – just don’t color me badd.

Freddie Freeman – 2/5, 2 R, HR, RBI…He remind anyone else of Votto-lite?

Evan Longoria – 2/2, R, HR, RBI…Longo trying to get over .240.

Looks like slumps could be ending soon…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Nate Schierholtz – 3/6, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…”Schier Holtz!” Remember his love triangle with Maebe and George Michael?

The Bats:
Evan Longoria
– 3/6, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…Him and D.Wright should inject some roids so they live up to their draft position!

Hunter Pence – 3/5, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB…A lot of sites are calling for him to regress, which will probably happen, but that doesn’t mean he won’t put up stats like years previous. Love me some Pence.

Ryan Zimmerman – 3/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…RBIs no. 14 and 15. Look out!

Dan Uggla – 2/3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…B2B games with a homer and Uggly is now batting .183.

Jordan Schafer – 4/5, R, RBI, SB…Seems like he is tearing the cover off the ball lately – but he’s not.

Austin Jackson – 0/1, 2 R, 4 BB…Four walks?!?!?! Throw it over the plate, he won’t hit it!

I was off on Friday hanging out with some rednecks and Deliverance-esque folks. Quite the time!

Onto it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Evan Longoria – 4/6, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI…She is SO hot.

The Bats:
Jhonny Peralta
– 3/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Guy has been a find for managers this year.

Jimmy Rollins – 4/4, 2 R…He wants to push towards .300, but the means keep him around .260.

Nick Markakis – 3/5, 2 RBI, SB…Keep this up so I can trade you, ya bum.

Brandon Phillips – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Must be lovely to hit in front of Votto.

Jeff Keppinger – 3/3, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI…This guy is still playing? Wasn’t he in the same rookie class with Dickie Thon?

Batters headline today’s Breakdown, but a pitcher headlines the Bats and Arms…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Tim Hudson – 8/2/0/8:1…Hudson also hit a 2-run shot to secure victory for the Braves.

The Bats:
Carlos Santana
– 3/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Ok, it is ON!

Carlos Gonzalez – 3/5, 2 R, SB…Lead-off hitter excelling!

Nick Markakis – 3/4, 2 R…Don’t look now, but Markakis has 9 hits in his last 4 games. Where da power at?

Adrian Gonzalez – 3/5, 2 R, 3 RBI…Man On Fire.

Chase Headley – 4/5, 2 R…Batting .297 now. Career year? Still not exciting!

Orlando Hudson – 3/5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…O-Dog showing us he’s still alive.

Full schedule last night, so let’s get into it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Adrian Gonzalez – 3/6, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBIHe is making up for lost time in a big way lately.

The Bats:
Andrew McCutchen
– 3/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…Despite the .242 average, McCutch now has 7 HR and 19 RBI.

Matt Kemp – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…Kemp has cooled off in May, much to Jesse’s delight, but tonight was a nice showing. He is now batting .336 with 7 HR and 24 RBI.

Martin Prado – 2/5, 2 R, HR, RBI…Prado has had a quiet year, but his numbers aren’t too shabby.

Jayson Werth – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI…The average is still terrible, but I think he is a nice buy low.

Derek Jeter – 2/4, R, RBI, SB…Look who’s still kicking!

Victor Martinez – 3/4, 2 R, 4 RBI, BB…Continues to rake!

Austin Jackson – 2/5, R, BB, SB…Last four  games have been nice. Rest of season? Not so good.

04.03.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz, and Mark Teixeira all went yard again. That makes 3 in 3 games for each of them.

Miguel Cabrera, Jorge Posada, Howie Kendrick (3 in 4 games) and sleeper catcher Ryan Hanigan each belted two home runs.

Brennan Boesch went 4-4 with a HR and 4 RBI.

Max Scherzer and Phil Hughes both looked terrible giving up 6 home runs between them. Better days are ahead for Scherzer, but Hughes’ velocity was down. Monitor him.

Matt Harrison shut the Sawx down, striking out 8 over 7 innings allowing 7 base runners and one run.

Javier Vazquez, welcome to the American Lea….wait a tick. Ok, so league matters no more to Vazquez. His velocity scared me off in the pre-season, so I wouldn’t go near him in drafts and now it’s still around where he was for the Yanks. Owners be scared. Vazquez was lit up by the AAAA Mets lineup, serving up 2 homers and 5 walks in 2.1 innings.

R.A. Dickey shut down the Fish over 6 innings, allowing 8 base runners and striking out 7.

The ChiSox offered John Danks no run support as he lost to the Tribe. Turned in a great outing nonetheless, giving up just 2 runs on 6 hits while K-ing 8.

Tim Hudson shut the Nats down going 7 strong allowing only 3 hits while striking out 5.

Roy Oswalt beat his old team striking out 6, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits.

Ryan Howard stayed hot going 3-5 with a home run and 4 RBI.

Rookie Zach Britton was great in his first MLB start for the O’s, striking out 6 Rays in 6 innings and giving up just 1 run on 3 hits. Speculative grab!

Jaime Garcia was masterful against the Padres, shutting them out and allowing just 6 base runners while striking out 9. I do not think this will be the norm, but if you have him you’ll take it.

Starlin Castro went 3-4 and is now hitting .615. He will hit .300, but he needs more counting stats to be elite.

Bobby Abreu reached base SEVEN times, going 5-5 with 2 BB and a HR. Wow. Didn’t think the old man had it in ’em!

Gio Gonzalez shut the M’s down, although he did allow 6 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings. Is it possible he finishes 2011 with an ERA lower than his WHIP?

EDIT…

Disbaled List: Evan Longoria, Jair Jurrjens, and Brian Matusz were all placed on the 15-day DL. Longoria will be out three weeks with a strained oblique. Matusz will be sidelined at LEAST three weeks, maybe six, with a strained intercostal muscle. Jurrjens (side) was also placed on the 15-day DL, but is expected to make his debut on April 16th.

Hot Stove Baseball: Spring Training Edition

Spring is here, kind of, as we had the start of baseball this weekend. All of us fantasy baseball fanatics have been waiting for this day since the end of last season and it’s been a long winter of withdrawal.

Without further ado, let’s get to the highlights from the games and the week of training:

Game Highlights

Friday

  • Giants 7, Diamondbacks 6 . Lincecum started and pitched 1 2/3 giving up 3 runs and 5 hits. Not a stellar start for the ace, but about typical for him in spring training. Joe Saunders started for Arizona and took the loss but had a nice 1-2-3 first inning. Aaron Rowand started in center with Andres Torres at DH, they are the 2 candidates for the CF job at the moment.
