Weekly Minor League Recap

Jesus Montero, NYY, C, Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees (#3): Montero had a quiet week; no HRs, no RBIs, no extra base hits at all. The boredom of minor league baseball is just too much for him right now. The most anticipated call up of the year (at least in NYC) should be less than 2 weeks away. Unless he goes .350/.450/.650, it will of course be deemed a colossal failure.

-Dayan Viciedo, CWS, OF, Charlotte Knights (unranked): Viciedo had three HRs (two in one game) and 7 RBIs last week, which should make him more attractive to fantasy owners come September. He also only K’ed once; bonus!

Devin Mesoraco, CIN, C, Louisville Bats (#64): Mesoraco was 4 for 17 last week, but with 5 BBs and only 2 Ks. He has a nifty .250/.375/.536 line over his last ten.

Adrian Cardenas, OAK, DH, Sacramento River Cats (unranked): Cardenas had one his best weeks in a while, going 14 for 29 with 6 RBIs and 3 steals. Now back over .300 (.312) for the year, to go with a .378 OBP.

Brandon Guyer, TB, OF, Durham Bulls (unranked): Guyer was 10 for 27 with 5 RBIs and 2 steals last week, and has only 3Ks since returning on 8/13.

08.07.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Welcome back to Box Score Breakdown.  Again today, I’ll be guesting for Mike.   Quite a weekend of baseball.  The Phillies took 3 of 4 from the Giants in an NLCS rematch/possible preview but had their win streak snapped at 9.  The Pirates continue to slide out of the playoff race as their losing streak reaches 10, what a nightmare.  The Yanks and Red Sox also gave us a taste of October with a great match up and great back drop to write this to.

4th and Home Player of the Day: Prince Fielder 3/4, 4 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB.  Prince gonna get paid.  .304/26/85.  Brewers 3 up on the Cards.

The Bats:
Albert Pujols – 2/4, 3 R, RBI, HR, BB…Homers in 3 of his last 4 games, now at 27 and batting .282.  Amazingly has re-entered MVP talk if he can get the Cardinals the Division title.

Matt Holliday – 2/4, 1 R, 3 RBI, BB…Along with Berkman, just an awesome 3,4,5 punch.  Back to back multi-hit games raises his avg to .318.  10 hits and 10 rbi this week.

Drew Stubbs – 2/3, 2 R, RBI, BB, HR, SB…BSFU!  Snaps out of a mini slump

Marlon Byrd – 3/3, R, 2 RBI, BB…Avg back up to .310 – but where is the power?  Cubs are just playing out the string – there’s always next year Chicago.

Logan Morrison – 1/4…Writing not about the 1/4 but to say, is this all?  Morrison is starting to become a real disappointment.  He’ll have quick short bursts of power then zzz through a week like this one.

Jason Heyward – 1/2, 2 R, 1 RBI, HR, BB…Speaking of disappointments…Heyward was benched for the last 2 games and responded by crushing a home run in his first AB.   He went on a tear to end 2010 and his graphs are trending that way again.

Jose Constanza – 2/3, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB, SB…BSFU!  Has now hit in 8 of his first 9 MLB games including 7 in a row.  If you saw this coming from the 27 year old rookie, go you!  He also took out Met’s Daniel Murphy on a hard SB slide, possibly ending his season.

Dan Uggla – 1/5…Continues the ugliest (pun unintentional) hitting streak in recent memory.  Has raised his average 42 points….to .220!!

Nice Show last night as we had Chris come on to talk about his Minor League Recap article. Good stuff as you know.

Onto the BSB!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Cliff Lee– 2-hit SHO/5:2…Three straight shutouts. Shields who?

The Bats:
Miguel Tejada
– 3/6, 2 R, HR, RBI…Not dead yet! But soon.

Pat Burrell – 3/5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…Him and Rowand turned back the clocks in game one of the double dipper.

Domonic Brown – 2/3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…There we go. C’mon, Straw, Jr.!

Nick Swisher – 2/4, R, HR, 4 RBI…On my bench. Figures.

Jose Reyes – 4/4, 3 R, SB…Simply the hottest player in baseball right now. (BREAKING NEWS: The Mets are over .500! WOO HOO!)

Carlos Beltran – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…”Hey Nolan, I can do THIS in Arlington!”

I was off on Friday hanging out with some rednecks and Deliverance-esque folks. Quite the time!

Onto it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Evan Longoria – 4/6, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI…She is SO hot.

The Bats:
Jhonny Peralta
– 3/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Guy has been a find for managers this year.

Jimmy Rollins – 4/4, 2 R…He wants to push towards .300, but the means keep him around .260.

Nick Markakis – 3/5, 2 RBI, SB…Keep this up so I can trade you, ya bum.

Brandon Phillips – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Must be lovely to hit in front of Votto.

Jeff Keppinger – 3/3, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI…This guy is still playing? Wasn’t he in the same rookie class with Dickie Thon?

A great show last night. You have to listen to hear the crazy Killboy story. Too insane to believe!

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Justin Verlander – 2-hit SHO, 12K…Verlander walked Brantley in the 7th to end the perfect game and then gave up a single to Cabrera in the 8th to end the no-no. Besides that, another dominating outing by Verlander.

The Bats:
Domonic Brown
– 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…The Rook is holding his own. I think he may explode this summer.

Jimmy Rollins – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…J-Roll needs to get going for owners and the Phillies.

Chase Utley – 2/3, R, HR, 2 RBI…I think he is just about BACK.

Shane Victorino – 3/5, 2 R…Look for him also to explode this summer when the Phillies offense starts clicking.

Brett Gardner – 3/4, 3 R, RBI, SB…Time for him to get going while Loverboy is on the DL.

Curtis Granderson – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…The HRs just keep on coming.

Nick Swisher – 2/3, 2 R, HR, RBI…Been a rough year so far for Swish.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Gems: National League

Angel Pagan, OF New York Mets ( 45 percent owned in Yahoo, 74.8 percent in ESPN)

Current Stat Line: .242 AVG / 16 R / 1 HR / 13 RBI / 9 SB

Pagan’s season couldn’t have started out much worse. He started the year hitting .159 AVG through April 21st then suffered an oblique injury that caused him to miss more than a month. It seems like the time off just may have been what he needed. Since his return he has hit .339 AVG, 9 R, 7 RBI, 5 SB in 15 games. Right now he is hitting in the five-spot but a move to leadoff is possible if the Mets move Jose Reyes.

Projection: .275 AVG / 53 R / 7 HR / 47 RBI / 25 SB

Todd Helton, 1B Colorado Rockies ( 41 percent owned in Yahoo, 61.4 percent in ESPN)

Current Stat Line: .322 AVG / 28 R / 8 HR / 28 RBI / 0 SB

Todd Helton seems to be having a bounce back year. He has been slowed the past few years with injuries to his back but when he has been in the lineup, he has produced. As recently as ’09 he went .329 AVG, 79 R, 15 HR, 86 RBI. Helton has never been the “sexy” pick but I can’t understand this ownership level.

Projection: .318 AVG / 70 R / 17 HR / 72 RBI / 0 SB

Anthony Rizzo, 1B San Diego Padres ( 23 percent owned in Yahoo, 40.5 percent in ESPN)

Current Stat Line: .429 AVG / 2 R / 1 HR / 1 RBI / 0 SB

Before getting the call to San Diego, Rizzo was crushing the PCL. He put up a line of .365 AVG, 42 R, 16 HR, 63 RBI prior to the call. For those of you who don’t know, the PCL is extremely hitter friendly and Petco Park is the worst for left-handed batters. Rizzo is here to be the Padres 1B everyday.

Projection: .255 AVG / 37 R / 11 HR / 40 RBI / 2 SB

Dee Gordon, SS Los Angeles Dodgers ( 15 percent owned in Yahoo)

Current Stat Line: .304 AVG / 4 R / 0 HR / 0 RBI / 2 SB

Dee Gordon has stepped in nicely as the everyday SS and leadoff hitter for the Dodgers. He doesn’t project as a power threat but he has stolen 22 bases in the minors this year. The team does not have any better options because Furcal has been out since June 4 with an oblique injury.

Projection: .279 AVG / 50 R / 1 HR / 20 RBI / 26 SB

Tim Stauffer, SP San Diego Padres ( 39 percent owned in Yahoo, 17.8 percent in ESPN)

Current Stat Line: 2 W / 4 L / 63 K / 3.58 ERA / 1.31 WHIP

Tim Stauffer has pitched better than what his surface numbers would indicate. He currently owns a 7.27 K/9 and 2.31 BB/9 to go along with a xFIP of 3.07. He looked stellar against the Rockies and he gets the Nationals today so get him while you can!

Projection: 9 W / 10 L / 150 K / 3.50 ERA / 1.30 WHIP

05.09.11 Fantasy Baseball Hot & Cold List

Have a player who’s playing out of his mind or drastically underachieving? Keep reading right here and get our advice on some of the hottest and coldest players in the majors.

Jose Reyes

Last 7 games: .419 Avg, 3 R, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 4 SB

Call: Buy

A new Jose sits atop the list this week! While the out of his mind batting average won’t continue, the steals will and he should generate some solid run production. If he stays healthy, he should have been a value pick in the draft.

Still trying to process how Cliff Lee can strike out 16 and lose, oh that’s right the Phil’s bats went back to sleep and they hate facing Derek Lowe who took a no-no into the 7th.

Here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Andre Ethier – 3/5… The Streak is now at 30!

Ryan Howard – 0/4 3 Ks… 3 for his last 24 since the Grand Slam

Chipper Jones – 2/5, R, RBI… Larry’s 24th RBI, 5th in the NL.

Jay Bruce – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI… Bruce’s 7th on the year, 2nd in as many days…could be going on a tear.

Jason Bourgeois – 3/5, R, SB… The Astros’ new lead off hitter is on a tear – 6 game hitting streak which includes 4 multi hit games and SBs in 5 of 6 games.  He better be on your radar by now if not in your lineup, now batting .412 with 12 sb!

Hunter Pence – 2/4, R, 2 RBI… Pence now batting .300 with 10 2B and 27 RBI… but when will some of these doubles start to leave the park (none the past 9 games)?

Derrek Lee – 1/3, R, HR, RBI, BB… Lee’s 3rd HR but it’s his 2nd this week – Lee is starting to show signs of life that Killboy was looking for as a sleeper candidate.

Adam Lind – 2/5, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR… Lind now batting .317 with 7 HR, 11 game hitting streak which includes 6 HR!  He is en fuego.

Jose Reyes – 3/4, 2 R, BB, SB… Joe King continues his quest to play his way out of Queens.

05.03.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

After crapping the bed the entire season, Francisco Liriano NO-HIT the Chicago White Sox. I am willing to bet the people that are still holding onto him, had him on their bench. I know Killboy did! That stinks. Great start, but not without concern as he K’d only 2 and walked 6. If you’re looking to sell, now is the time and be sure you point out the no-hitter and how he has “turned the corner” after noticing a mechanical flaw before this start. Good luck.

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Scott Sizemore
– 3/4, R, RBI…Recently recalled – and starting – second baseman could provide value in your middle infield.

Adrian Gonzalez – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Don’t talk about him much, but he’s quietly hitting .316 with 2 HR and 20 RBI.

Brett Wallace – 2/5, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB…Continues to hit. He’s now at .383 and in the clean-up spot, I assume until El Caballo comes back.

Jose Reyes – 3/3, R, RBI, 3 BB, SB…Joe King is the most consistent Met as he may be auditioning for another team. He’s now batting .325 with 11 steals.

Carlos Beltran – 2/4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB…How about that. Hitting .283 and playing every day. Let him sit on your wire.

04.17.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Andrew McCutchen – 3/3, R, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB…McCutch, is that you? It’s about time you start showing up. Now you’re batting .250 and most of us expect you to hit .300 this year. So, that means you need more of these days. Hang out with Tabata in the dugout, not Alvarez.

Jose Tabata – 1/5, R, HR, RBI, SB…Tabata is doing what I thought he would do. I can’t see him keeping this up, but he will continue to steal bases, just don’t expect 20 HR. 3 HR and 8 SB so far. Must think he’s Matt Kemp.

Garrett Jones – 2/4, R, HR, RBI, BB, SB…Ok, folks. Time to start monitoring Jones. That makes three straight multi-hit games. Remember 2009?

Pedro Alvarez – 0/4, 2 K…Something needs to give. Either bench him or send him to AAA. This is just bad and the exact reason I did not reach for him. He has K issues worse than NYC club-goers. He’s now batting .193 with 20K in 15 games.

Jay Bruce – 4/5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Now we’re talkin’! Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuce! Few more games like this and he’ll be batting .400 with 40 HR by All-Star break.

Grady Sizemore – 2/4, R, HR, RBI…Hmm, is this that former first round 30/30 threat?

Fausto Carmona – 7 IP, 5 H, ER, 5:1…I said that as long as he doesn’t walk people, he’ll be fine. Pitching against the Orioles doesn’t hurt either. Now has a 1.27 ERA since his Opening Day bed-crapping.

Jose Reyes – 2/4, 2 R, BB, SB…Reyes is now up to 6 doubles and 6 stolen bases while hitting .315. Everybody clap your hands!

Dillon Gee – 5.2 IP, 5 H, ER, 4:2…Take that, Braves! A little Gee to shut you down. Beat Tommy Hanson too. Look out!

Tommy Hanson – 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 9:2…Now (1-3). Maybe I overvalued the guy, but I was certain this was his year to shine. Still early, Mike. Still early.

Jon Lester – 6 IP, 6 H, ER, 5:3…Not incredibly sharp, but good enough today. 10 K in his next start. Book it.

Cole Hamels – 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 7:2…The kind of start you want to see, but a 2-run 6th prevented him from getting the W.

Anibal Sanchez – 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8:4…Still too many baserunners.

Placido Polanco – 3/4, R, HR, RBI…Did you know he’s batting .373? Me either. Gonna score a lot of runs in that 2-hole.

Brian Duensing – 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 5:2…Not bad. Monitor him as he has two nice match-ups coming up.

Livan Hernandez – 7 IP, 6 H, ER, 3:0…Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Do NOT pick him up.

Danny Espinosa – 2/7, R, HR, 6 RBI…Jesse’s lovefest continues.

Ian Desmond – 4/8, 2 R, HR, RBI, SB…He’s getting ready to push that average over .200…

Michael Pineda – 6 IP, 3 H, ER, 5:4…Three great starts to start his career off. No way he should be on the wire unless you’re in a two-teamer with yourself.

Dan Haren – 6.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 6:0…Now with a 27/2 K:BB ratio and a 1.16 ERA and 0.65 WHIP. At 4-0 he is the #1 fantasy pitcher.

Trevor Cahill – 8 IP, 4 H, ER, 9:0…Are you kidding me? Are you KIDDING me?

Seth Smith – 2/2, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Headed for an even better stat line before injuring himself. Seth was a popular deep sleeper this year. Guy has 7 doubles and is hitting .312. Let’s see if he’ll be back soon. Maybe he’ll end up on Killboy’s waiver list next week.

Carlos Gonzalez – 4/5, R, 2 RBI, SB…CarGo is heating up. I think I might have said that already.

Aaron Rowand – 2/5, R…Rowand now has 4 multi-hit games in his last 5.

Justin Upton – 2/4, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB…I try not to regret draft picks so early, but right now I am kicking myself for taking McCutchen over him.

Madison Bumgarner – 6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2:1…I am CONVINCED something is wrong with him.

Matt Kemp – 3/4, R, HR, 2 RBI, CS…Walk-off! Here is your #1 fantasy batter. He’s batting .474 now. Chasing Hornsby!

Chad Billingsley – 8 IP, 2 H, 11:2…Hate Billingsley and then he proves me stupid for saying that. Just an awesome start Broxton blew, but thankfully for Dodger fans there is…

Ryan Franklin – 0 IP, ER…Now has 4 blown saves and I would have to imagine Mitchell Boggs is the new Cardinal closer. Boggs went 3-up/3-down in his inning. But Boggs didn’t face Kemp!

Matt Holliday – 3/3, R, BB…Quietly hitting .441.

Adrian Beltre – 3/4, R, HR, 4 RBI…Beltre did everything he could to defeat the Yanks on his own.

Ian Kinsler – 0/4, R, BB…Hitting .170. The slide continues.

Brett Gardner – 0/2, K…Hitting .140. More sliding.
