08.07.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Welcome back to Box Score Breakdown.  Again today, I’ll be guesting for Mike.   Quite a weekend of baseball.  The Phillies took 3 of 4 from the Giants in an NLCS rematch/possible preview but had their win streak snapped at 9.  The Pirates continue to slide out of the playoff race as their losing streak reaches 10, what a nightmare.  The Yanks and Red Sox also gave us a taste of October with a great match up and great back drop to write this to.

4th and Home Player of the Day: Prince Fielder 3/4, 4 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB.  Prince gonna get paid.  .304/26/85.  Brewers 3 up on the Cards.

The Bats:
Albert Pujols – 2/4, 3 R, RBI, HR, BB…Homers in 3 of his last 4 games, now at 27 and batting .282.  Amazingly has re-entered MVP talk if he can get the Cardinals the Division title.

Matt Holliday – 2/4, 1 R, 3 RBI, BB…Along with Berkman, just an awesome 3,4,5 punch.  Back to back multi-hit games raises his avg to .318.  10 hits and 10 rbi this week.

Drew Stubbs – 2/3, 2 R, RBI, BB, HR, SB…BSFU!  Snaps out of a mini slump

Marlon Byrd – 3/3, R, 2 RBI, BB…Avg back up to .310 – but where is the power?  Cubs are just playing out the string – there’s always next year Chicago.

Logan Morrison – 1/4…Writing not about the 1/4 but to say, is this all?  Morrison is starting to become a real disappointment.  He’ll have quick short bursts of power then zzz through a week like this one.

Jason Heyward – 1/2, 2 R, 1 RBI, HR, BB…Speaking of disappointments…Heyward was benched for the last 2 games and responded by crushing a home run in his first AB.   He went on a tear to end 2010 and his graphs are trending that way again.

Jose Constanza – 2/3, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR, BB, SB…BSFU!  Has now hit in 8 of his first 9 MLB games including 7 in a row.  If you saw this coming from the 27 year old rookie, go you!  He also took out Met’s Daniel Murphy on a hard SB slide, possibly ending his season.

Dan Uggla – 1/5…Continues the ugliest (pun unintentional) hitting streak in recent memory.  Has raised his average 42 points….to .220!!

Seeing Bryce Harper tonight if the rain holds off. If they play, I am calling for a homer!

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Mark Teixeira – 3/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, SB…A BSFU from Teix? What is this world coming to? Besides the terrible average, he has MVP numbers.

The Bats:
Ian Desmond – 2/3, 2 R, HR, 3RBI….Was a nice night during a disappointing season for him.

Brennan Boesch – 3/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…BSFU in the rain. That is STRONG!

Nelson Cruz/Mike Napoli – 4/9, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…If I told you one of them was batting .264 and the other .294, would you be surprised by the answer?

Garrett Jones – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…May lose playing time with Ludwick in town.

Alfonso Soriano – 2/5, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…19 homers and a DL-stint? Bounceback!

Light day of action, but some noteworthy performances. It was the night of 2-HR games!

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Asdrubal Cabrera – 3/5, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…The career year continues.

The Bats:
Derrek Lee – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…Nice first game for the Bucs. And you KNOW this will be his last!

Jason Kipnis – 3/5, 3 R, HR, RBI…Two straight with a homer. Look out!

Rick Ankiel – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…Not bad coming from your lead-off hitter.

Dan Uggla – 3/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…Four HR in his past 4 games makes Uggla one of baseball’s hottest hitters.

Mike Stanton – 2/5, R, HR, 4 RBI…Grand slam in extras!

Did you catch Jesse on The 4th and Home Show last night?

4th and Home Player of the Day: Curtis Granderson – 3/6, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…A 50/30 season? Possible now!

The Bats:
Aramis Ramirez
– 1/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…That makes 8 HR in his last 12 games. Yeah, his power is back.

Derek Jeter – 2/6, R, 2 RBI…4 hits shy of 3,000 now.

Brandon Wood – 2/3, R, HR, 3 RBI…Oh yeah, I remember this guy. Quad-A stud.

Jose Bautista – 2/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…No. 28 and counting.

Matt Holliday – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…Holliday seems to produce more power in the second half in his old age. Looks like he’s starting early this year.

Well it was a sad day as I finally had to cut ties with Matt Joyce. Hey, I had to activate Jason Heyward!

Box scores, please…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Cliff Lee – 2-hit SHO/4:2…The pitching gems just keep on coming.

The Bats:
Adam Lind
– 2/4, R, HR, RBI…Still at it.

J.J. Hardy – 2/5, R, HR, RBI…Now 5 HR in June and batting over .400. Did you listen to Killboy?

Kosuke Fukudome – 3/5, 3 R, HR, 4 RBI…Batting ,301 now as half-a-platooner.

Alfonso Soriano – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Batting .275 with 13 HR. Not bad considering he’s missed some time.

Ryan Braun – 1/3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Like Kemp, also on pace for a 30/40 season. I’m inclined to think his steals drop soon.

Still trying to process how Cliff Lee can strike out 16 and lose, oh that’s right the Phil’s bats went back to sleep and they hate facing Derek Lowe who took a no-no into the 7th.

Here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Andre Ethier – 3/5… The Streak is now at 30!

Ryan Howard – 0/4 3 Ks… 3 for his last 24 since the Grand Slam

Chipper Jones – 2/5, R, RBI… Larry’s 24th RBI, 5th in the NL.

Jay Bruce – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI… Bruce’s 7th on the year, 2nd in as many days…could be going on a tear.

Jason Bourgeois – 3/5, R, SB… The Astros’ new lead off hitter is on a tear – 6 game hitting streak which includes 4 multi hit games and SBs in 5 of 6 games.  He better be on your radar by now if not in your lineup, now batting .412 with 12 sb!

Hunter Pence – 2/4, R, 2 RBI… Pence now batting .300 with 10 2B and 27 RBI… but when will some of these doubles start to leave the park (none the past 9 games)?

Derrek Lee – 1/3, R, HR, RBI, BB… Lee’s 3rd HR but it’s his 2nd this week – Lee is starting to show signs of life that Killboy was looking for as a sleeper candidate.

Adam Lind – 2/5, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR… Lind now batting .317 with 7 HR, 11 game hitting streak which includes 6 HR!  He is en fuego.

Jose Reyes – 3/4, 2 R, BB, SB… Joe King continues his quest to play his way out of Queens.

After crapping the bed the entire season, Francisco Liriano NO-HIT the Chicago White Sox. I am willing to bet the people that are still holding onto him, had him on their bench. I know Killboy did! That stinks. Great start, but not without concern as he K’d only 2 and walked 6. If you’re looking to sell, now is the time and be sure you point out the no-hitter and how he has “turned the corner” after noticing a mechanical flaw before this start. Good luck.

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Scott Sizemore
– 3/4, R, RBI…Recently recalled – and starting – second baseman could provide value in your middle infield.

Adrian Gonzalez – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Don’t talk about him much, but he’s quietly hitting .316 with 2 HR and 20 RBI.

Brett Wallace – 2/5, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB…Continues to hit. He’s now at .383 and in the clean-up spot, I assume until El Caballo comes back.

Jose Reyes – 3/3, R, RBI, 3 BB, SB…Joe King is the most consistent Met as he may be auditioning for another team. He’s now batting .325 with 11 steals.

Carlos Beltran – 2/4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB…How about that. Hitting .283 and playing every day. Let him sit on your wire.

Add another 3B to the scrap pile as David Freese broke a bone in his hand. Be sure to look at Brian and Killboy’s suggestions as possible corner infield substitutes until he comes back.
Carlos Lee
had a nasty collision with Killboy-favorite Angel Sanchez that might have looked worse than it actually was. He was carted off the field, but preliminary x-rays revealed no broken bones in his chest. This after blasting a 3-run HR.

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Matt Holliday
– 2/3, R, 2 RBI, BB…Matty Ho continues to rake as his average is still above .400 at a cool .418.

Curtis Granderson – 3/4, R, HR, 3 RBI…His 8th homer and better yet his average is up to .281. THRIVING in the jackhole (two-hole).

Garrett Jones – 2/4, 3 RBI, BB…Pick him up yet?

Matt Joyce – 3/3, R, RBI, BB, SB…Pick HIM up yet? C’mon! New readers excused.

Hanley Ramirez – 1/5, R, HR, 2 RBI…His first homer. It’s a start!

Mike Aviles – 3/5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, SB…Box score filler-upper! Look out as Aviles is heating up and doing his best to prove me right.

Ok, so if it isn’t bad enough for Killboy that he owns Gallardo and Liriano, I was perusing match-ups tonight and came across his pitching for the night. I see Ryan Dempster’s ERA at 189.00 and WHIP at 24.00.
HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!?!!?
Shazam that has to be a record. I have never seen anything like that before in fantasy baseball. It’s the craziest thing I’ve seen since I had Clinton Portis go off for 200+ yards and 5 TDs! Mind-boggling.

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

That's right, Jesse does love you.

The Bats:
Ben Zobrist – 7/10, 5 R, 2 HR, 10 RBI, SB…If you can believe it, Jesse did NOT have him on his bench. Simply one of the best fantasy game(s) you could ask for. He more than filled the box score in game one alone.

Ian Desmond – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…New daddy belts a homer and raises his average to .220! Makin’ baby proud!

Elvis Andrus – 2/4, R, 3 SB…Now up to 7 SB and is on pace for 40+. Still, I was hoping for 50 this year. Andrus stinks.

Travis Snider – 1/4, K…Batting .184 this year will not cut it for the greatest team in baseball. It gets you sent to AAA.

The Bats:
Joey Votto – 2/4, R, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB…Just another day at the ballpark.

Drew Stubbs – 2/5, 3 R, HR, RBI, BB…Walks up, Ks down and less streakiness for this “September Star”.

Jeff Francoeur – 2/4, R, HR, RBI…Frenchy continues to rake and the only noticeable change in his peripherals is that he’s hitting a lot more ground balls than ever before. Uhm, regression is coming.
