Weekly Minor League Recap

Jesus Montero, NYY, C, Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees (#3): Montero had a quiet week; no HRs, no RBIs, no extra base hits at all. The boredom of minor league baseball is just too much for him right now. The most anticipated call up of the year (at least in NYC) should be less than 2 weeks away. Unless he goes .350/.450/.650, it will of course be deemed a colossal failure.

-Dayan Viciedo, CWS, OF, Charlotte Knights (unranked): Viciedo had three HRs (two in one game) and 7 RBIs last week, which should make him more attractive to fantasy owners come September. He also only K’ed once; bonus!

Devin Mesoraco, CIN, C, Louisville Bats (#64): Mesoraco was 4 for 17 last week, but with 5 BBs and only 2 Ks. He has a nifty .250/.375/.536 line over his last ten.

Adrian Cardenas, OAK, DH, Sacramento River Cats (unranked): Cardenas had one his best weeks in a while, going 14 for 29 with 6 RBIs and 3 steals. Now back over .300 (.312) for the year, to go with a .378 OBP.

Brandon Guyer, TB, OF, Durham Bulls (unranked): Guyer was 10 for 27 with 5 RBIs and 2 steals last week, and has only 3Ks since returning on 8/13.

Good show last night. So much info, so little time.

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Jeff Niemann – CG/3/2/10:1…For Jesse. Awesome selection.

The Bats:
Mike Morse – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Morse is now on pace for a 25/100 season. Can’t believe I dropped him when he started off cold. Ouch.

Andrew McCutchen – 2/3, R, HR, 3 RBI, SB…BSFU! Outside shot at 25 HR, but 30 SB may not be in the cards.

Jacoby Ellsbury – 2/7, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…Is there any stopping this guy?

Robinson Cano – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…He’s heating up. 30 bombs? Outside chance.

Brian Bogusevic – 1/1, R, HR, 4 RBI…Walk-off Salami? Doesn’t get better than that!

The Bats:
Mike Stanton
– 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Some think he has a 40/20 season in him. I sure hope so!

David Wright – 3/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…To say he’s been hot since his DL-activation would be an understatement.

Colby Rasmus – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Upping his price tag?

Hideki Matsui – 5/5, R, RBI…How does a 3-hole hitter produce little when getting 5 hits? Oh, when you’re an Athletic.

Nick Markakis – 3/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Been hot this month, but the overall line is still garbage. Still glad I dropped him.

Torii Hunter – 3/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Hunter batting .237. That’s about his age too!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Joe Mauer – 6/8, R, RBI…”Well played, Mauer.”

The Bats:
Mike Morse

Ryan Zimmerman – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Gosh it’s been a disappointing year for third basemen.

J.J. Hardy – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…A great year for Hardy and of course the O’s locked him up.

Carlos Pena – 3/3, R, HR, 2 RBI…Pena is having a Pena-type year. I really thought it he would’ve fared better in Wrigley.

Curtis Granderson – 2/3, 2 R, 2 SB…No homers since the All-Star game, but stop you’re pouting. He’s hitting .350.

Fantasy MLB Spot Starting: 06.27.11

Welcome to another week of Spot Starting.  I was lucky enough to be at the Phillies game yesterday with my Aunt and 5 year old son to watch the Doc put on a clinic.  I was 5 in ’83 when the Phillies went to the Series but I don’t have any memory of it – here’s hoping my little guy has an elephant’s memory because these are special times to be a Phils fan.

For games on Tuesday June 28th these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Kevin Correia 45% / 40% (PIT) @ TOR

Javier Vazquez 24% / 3% (FLA) @ OAK

Jason Marquis 17% / 11% (WAS) @ LAA

Rick Porcello 15% / 9% (DET) vs. NYM

Freddy Garcia 13% / 8% (NYY) vs. MIL

R.A. Dickey 13% / 4% (NYM) @ DET

Clayton Richard 13% / 1% (SD) vs. KC

Jordan Lyles 3% / 2% (HOU) vs. TEX

Jhonny Peralta

Jimmy Rollins – 4/4, 2 R…He wants to push towards .300, but the means keep him around .260.

Nick Markakis – 3/5, 2 RBI, SB…Keep this up so I can trade you, ya bum.

Brandon Phillips – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…Must be lovely to hit in front of Votto.

Jeff Keppinger – 3/3, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI…This guy is still playing? Wasn’t he in the same rookie class with Dickie Thon?

Weekly Minor League Recap

Jesus Montero, NYY, C, Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees (#3): Montero is still mouldering away at SWB, mainly because the Yankees do not have a regular place for him to play every day, except for possibly DH.  They don’t want to have the kid start his career just batting, and so we must wait (Insert Second Coming joke here).  His average has dropped to .315, but he is showing more power of late, hitting 2 HR and 3 doubles in his last ten.  His walk/k ratio still sucks though (8/31).

Brett Lawrie, TOR, 2b/3b, Vegas 51s (#40): Lawrie is back to hitting for average to go along with his prodigious power.  He is at .375/.490/.800 with 4 HRs, 13 RBIs, 9 BBs, and 7 Ks over his last ten.  He already has more HRs this year (11) than last year (8) in 92 fewer games.  But blah blah blah his glove is nonexistent blah blah blah.

Adrian Cardenas, OAK, DH/2b, Sacramento River Cats (unranked): The beat goes on for Cardenas average wise, as he hit .411 over his last ten.  He also showed some power, slugging .618 (though just one hit went over the fence).  Still getting on base over 40% of the time.

Brandon Guyer, TB, OF, Durham Bulls (unranked): Guyer is at .176/.300/.206 over his past ten.  Looking more and more like the HR in his major league debut was a giant fluke

-Yonder Alonso, CIN, OF, Louisville Bats (#73): Alonso is rolling along at .375/.468/.550 in his last ten.  More importantly, he had 7 walks to 4 strikeouts; patience increases call up potential IMO.

A rough weekend to be a writer here at 4th and Home. I apologize if you waited patiently for a Breakdown and I did not deliver. Shame on me. I hope it never happens again.

Anyway, onto it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Jose Bautista – 3/5, 3 R, 3 HR, 4 RBI…Ridiculous!!! Nothin’ else to say.

The Bats:
Lance Berkman
– 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…There he is! First HR since May 5th. And you thought he reverted to Puma 2010…

Ramon Hernandez – 2/4, R, HR, RBI…Three HR in his last two games. Need a backstop?

Dan Uggla – 2/3, 3 R, HR, RBI…Hit the game winner off Doc Halladay. Maybe this gives him some confidence to hit another 30 this year before Brian pulls his hair out.

John Mayberry – 1/2, R, HR, 2 RBI, SB…Keeping it warm for the injured (again) DomBrown.

Matt Joyce – 2/3, 2 R, HR, RBI…Pick him up, YET? If it makes you feel better, yours truly owns him. Actually dropped Luke Scott for him. Feel better? Good, now pick him up.

05.10.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Full schedule last night, so let’s get into it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Adrian Gonzalez – 3/6, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBIHe is making up for lost time in a big way lately.

The Bats:
Andrew McCutchen
– 3/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…Despite the .242 average, McCutch now has 7 HR and 19 RBI.

Matt Kemp – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI…Kemp has cooled off in May, much to Jesse’s delight, but tonight was a nice showing. He is now batting .336 with 7 HR and 24 RBI.

Martin Prado – 2/5, 2 R, HR, RBI…Prado has had a quiet year, but his numbers aren’t too shabby.

Jayson Werth – 1/4, R, HR, 3 RBI…The average is still terrible, but I think he is a nice buy low.

Derek Jeter – 2/4, R, RBI, SB…Look who’s still kicking!

Victor Martinez – 3/4, 2 R, 4 RBI, BB…Continues to rake!

Austin Jackson – 2/5, R, BB, SB…Last four  games have been nice. Rest of season? Not so good.

Jose Reyes

Last 7 games: .419 Avg, 3 R, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 4 SB

Call: Buy

A new Jose sits atop the list this week! While the out of his mind batting average won’t continue, the steals will and he should generate some solid run production. If he stays healthy, he should have been a value pick in the draft.
