08.16.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Good show last night. So much info, so little time.

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Jeff Niemann – CG/3/2/10:1…For Jesse. Awesome selection.

The Bats:
Mike Morse – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Morse is now on pace for a 25/100 season. Can’t believe I dropped him when he started off cold. Ouch.

Andrew McCutchen – 2/3, R, HR, 3 RBI, SB…BSFU! Outside shot at 25 HR, but 30 SB may not be in the cards.

Jacoby Ellsbury – 2/7, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…Is there any stopping this guy?

Robinson Cano – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…He’s heating up. 30 bombs? Outside chance.

Brian Bogusevic – 1/1, R, HR, 4 RBI…Walk-off Salami? Doesn’t get better than that!

Looks like slumps could be ending soon…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Nate Schierholtz – 3/6, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI…”Schier Holtz!” Remember his love triangle with Maebe and George Michael?

The Bats:
Evan Longoria
– 3/6, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…Him and D.Wright should inject some roids so they live up to their draft position!

Hunter Pence – 3/5, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB…A lot of sites are calling for him to regress, which will probably happen, but that doesn’t mean he won’t put up stats like years previous. Love me some Pence.

Ryan Zimmerman – 3/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…RBIs no. 14 and 15. Look out!

Dan Uggla – 2/3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…B2B games with a homer and Uggly is now batting .183.

Jordan Schafer – 4/5, R, RBI, SB…Seems like he is tearing the cover off the ball lately – but he’s not.

Austin Jackson – 0/1, 2 R, 4 BB…Four walks?!?!?! Throw it over the plate, he won’t hit it!

A great show last night. You have to listen to hear the crazy Killboy story. Too insane to believe!

Onto it!

4th and Home Player of the Day: Justin Verlander – 2-hit SHO, 12K…Verlander walked Brantley in the 7th to end the perfect game and then gave up a single to Cabrera in the 8th to end the no-no. Besides that, another dominating outing by Verlander.

The Bats:
Domonic Brown
– 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…The Rook is holding his own. I think he may explode this summer.

Jimmy Rollins – 2/5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…J-Roll needs to get going for owners and the Phillies.

Chase Utley – 2/3, R, HR, 2 RBI…I think he is just about BACK.

Shane Victorino – 3/5, 2 R…Look for him also to explode this summer when the Phillies offense starts clicking.

Brett Gardner – 3/4, 3 R, RBI, SB…Time for him to get going while Loverboy is on the DL.

Curtis Granderson – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…The HRs just keep on coming.

Nick Swisher – 2/3, 2 R, HR, RBI…Been a rough year so far for Swish.

It was a “night” dominated by the pitchers. Killboy had his wonderkids going in Dempster and Gallardo. Dempster blew it, but how did Gallardo do?

Anyway, onto it…

4th and Home Player of the Day: Jake Peavy – SHO, 3 H, 8:0…Uhm, where did this come from? You know people had him stashed on their DL for this one. Now they will activate him and he will implode.

The Bats:
Alex Rodriguez
– 4/7, 2 R…Two straight appearances in this column. Perhaps he is heating up.

Hanley Ramirez – 2/5, 2 R, HR, RBI, SB…BSFU! Nice to see HanRam make an appearance here.

Matt Joyce – 1/3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…He also had two walks and he is not slowing down. I’ve had him plugged in since I picked him up. Against righties, he is mashing.

Elliot Johnson – 2/3, R, 3 RBI…In his last 3 starts: 5/10, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI. Maddon said he’d play him while he’s hot.

Eric Hosmer – 1/5, R, HR, RBI…Game-tying solo shot off Neftali Feliz to send it to extra innings. After the game, Boras told the Royals they could lock him up now for a 10 yr/100MM contract.

05.07.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

The big news of the day of course was Justin Verlander’s no hitter in Toronto.  He faced the minimum with his only blemish a walk to to J.P. Arencibia erased on a DP.  On the other side of the spectrum we saw the end of Andre Ethier’s hitting streak against last minute replacement starter Dillon Gee.  Lots of zeros, ones and twos on the scoreboards as the Arms beat the Bats today across the league.

Here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Andre Ethier – 0/4, BB… The Streak is over at 30.  One shy of the team record.  Andre must have heard he wasn’t getting paid anymore.

Matt Kemp – 1/4… Mr. April only hitting .250 in May which is historically his 2nd worst month.

Jose Reyes – 2/5, RBI… Picked off first base day dreaming of playing for another team.  Now hitting .329.

The Blue Jays – 0/26, BB, 4 K… wonder how many times a team has had fewer than 27 ABs in a game.

Jhonny Peralta – 2/5, R, 2 RBI, HR… The Tigers 9 run attack to back Verlander was pretty evenly distributed but Peralta did hit his 2nd HR and his average is up to .273.

Ryan Howard – 1/4, R, RBI, HR… Ryan reads this article and it inspired him to go deep for his 7th.  Now at 30 RBI.

Kosuke Fukudome – 3/4, RBI, BB… Not just any RBI – walk off style.  Raise your hand if you knew he was still batting .360 as he’s cooled off.  Still, the platoon suits him.

Carlos Pena – 3/4, R, RBI, HR… 3rd home in 4 games and nearing the Mendoza line.

Jacoby Ellsbury – 2/5, R, 2 RBI, SB… Nice box score filling day for Ellsbury – his 9th SB and up to 17 ribbies out of the lead off spot.

Evan Longoria – 2/4, R, 4 RBI, HR… Longoria finally gets off the shnide hitting his first of the year and collecting his first 4 RBI after missing so much time on the DL.

Ben Zobrist – 4/5, 3 R… Zobrist collected 4 hits in a game the Rays score 8 runs but yet got no RBI – Rays 8,9,1 hitters went 0/13.  Zobrist should be hitting 5th where he has 16 RBI, come on Joe Maddon.

Andre Ethier kept his hit-streak alive with a weak infield blooper to the left side.28 and counting!

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

The Bats:
Alex Avila
– 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…Hey, Brian told you he had power last weekend!

David Ortiz – 2/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…He’s batting .277 now. Surprised me too!

Jacoby Ellsbury – 2/4, 3 R, 2 SB…Good one, Mike. Sure Brett Gardner will put up equal stats…

Paul Konerko – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI…Drop-off from last year? I think not! 8 HR and 24 RBI while hitting .302. Nice!

Alex Rios – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI, SB…Box Score filler-upper!

04.28.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Ok, so if it isn’t bad enough for Killboy that he owns Gallardo and Liriano, I was perusing match-ups tonight and came across his pitching for the night. I see Ryan Dempster’s ERA at 189.00 and WHIP at 24.00.
Shazam that has to be a record. I have never seen anything like that before in fantasy baseball. It’s the craziest thing I’ve seen since I had Clinton Portis go off for 200+ yards and 5 TDs! Mind-boggling.

Anyway, here’s what else I saw:

That's right, Jesse does love you.

The Bats:
Ben Zobrist – 7/10, 5 R, 2 HR, 10 RBI, SB…If you can believe it, Jesse did NOT have him on his bench. Simply one of the best fantasy game(s) you could ask for. He more than filled the box score in game one alone.

Ian Desmond – 2/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…New daddy belts a homer and raises his average to .220! Makin’ baby proud!

Elvis Andrus – 2/4, R, 3 SB…Now up to 7 SB and is on pace for 40+. Still, I was hoping for 50 this year. Andrus stinks.

Travis Snider – 1/4, K…Batting .184 this year will not cut it for the greatest team in baseball. It gets you sent to AAA.

The Bats:
Joey Votto – 2/4, R, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB…Just another day at the ballpark.

Drew Stubbs – 2/5, 3 R, HR, RBI, BB…Walks up, Ks down and less streakiness for this “September Star”.

Jeff Francoeur – 2/4, R, HR, RBI…Frenchy continues to rake and the only noticeable change in his peripherals is that he’s hitting a lot more ground balls than ever before. Uhm, regression is coming.

04.22.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Chad Billingsley – 6.1 IP, 7 H, ER, 3:3…Not flashy, but effective.

Kosuke Fukudome – 3/4, R…Batting .417 on the year now with 15 hits; all singles.

Juan Uribe – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI…2 HR and 9 RBI in his last 3 games.

Justin Verlander – 7 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 8:0…Arguably the best April of his career now.

Ryan Raburn – 2/5, R, HR, 4 RBI…B2B games with a homer. Hopefully this begins his ascension into “stardom.”

Carlos Quentin – 2/4, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI…3 HR in his last three games, Quentin is putting up very solid numbers thus far.

04.10.11 Box Score Breakdown: Fantasy MLB News and Notes

Jered Weaver – 7.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 15:4…Jed was flat-out NASTY on Sunday. Sure he faced a free-swinging Jays line-up, but striking out 15 batters in 7.2 innings is no joke! The 125 pitches is a bit much, but what was Mike supposed to do after using his bullpen AND Dan Haren in last night’s 14 inning game? And what’s the deal with Mike. Now Rodney’s closing again? C’mon!

Jason Marquis – 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 9:2…Was in line for a loss against the Mets, but Pudge and Gang pulled out a victory to give Marquis a ND. Nice start, but I’m not buying.

Miguel Cabrera – 2/4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI…Miggy went yard off of Hochevar for his 4th and raised his average to .355 in the process. So long as he’s off the wagon (or is it on the wagon?), he’s a lock for another MVP-type season.

Wilson Betemit – 4/4, 2 R, RBI, BB, SB…Playing while Aviles gets his head out of his –

Cole Hamels – 8 IP, 4 H, 8:1…Hamels relieved his owners after a first start stinker earlier this week with a dominant start in Atlanta. This is what most of us expected and as long as he’s healthy (Jesse!) he will be a top starter this year.

Shane Victorino – 3/4, 2 R, HR, RBI…The Flying Hawaiian stayed hot and raised his average to .417. Word is the Phils were working with Shane pre-season to get him to STOP swinging for the fences. Well, he still went yard today, but it was his first.

Derek Holland – 6 IP, 5 H, 6:2…Holland turned in another decent start. He is someone you should probabaly pick up – or monitor – at this point. He’s pitching for a powerhouse and he’s had minor league success. Maybe this is the year it translates.

Ian Kinsler – 2/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…Hit his 4th HR while trying to get that average to creep up. It now sits at .250.

Adrian Beltre – 1/4, R, HR, RBI…Beltre hit his 3rd of the year. Quick hit: 7 hits this year, 3 of which are HR. Now batting .189.

Jhoulys Chacin – 6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3:2…Not a “purdy” start, but owners will take the W.

James McDonald – 6.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3:3…Everyone’s pre-season sleeper isn’t looking good. I’m still monitoring.

Jose Tabata – 1/3, R, BB, SB…Steal numero CINCO on the year for Tabata. Oh, that’s FIVE for all of you who forgot 7th grade spanish.

Brandon McCarthy – 7.1 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 5:0…Like Holland, McCarthy had minor league success and is looking to prove the naysayers wrong. Monitor, but the #5 for Oakland isn’t making me rush to the wire.

Scott Baker – 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 5:2…Gross. Now two crap starts to begin the year after “earning” his rotation spot over Slowey. I would bench until further notice.

J.A. Happ – 7.2, 4 H, ER, 5:4…Hey now! Not too shabby. It was against a HanRam-less Fish, but decent. Monitor.

Anibal Sanchez – 4.2 IP, 13 H, 6 ER, 2:0…I’m sick of this guy. Every single year he’s on my watch list and I’m tempted to grab him. Why? Flashes of brilliance and then all hell breaks lose on your ERA and WHIP. He’s a tease. Thankfully Eric picks him up every year in our league so I don’t have to quit fantasy baseball.

Yovani Gallardo – 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2:4…I am officially scared. Not so much of the amount of baserunners (that is why I always stay away and rank him so low), but because of the drop in Ks. He now has only 8 in 20 IP. Somethin’s up…

Gavin Floyd – 8 IP, 4 H, 8:1…After a rough start, Floyd had a nice bounceback game vs. the Rays.

Paul Konerko – 2/3, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI, BB…Two jacks and now hitting .400. As Eric mentioned, he came at a discount and was worth it.

Aramis Ramirez – 3/5, 3 RBI…Now hitting .282 since All-Star break.

Prince Fielder – 3/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…2nd homer in as many days. Just like that he’s hitting .400.

Ryan Braun – 1/4, R, HR, 2 RBI…Hit his 4th homer and is now hitting .353. You really think he’ll only hit 25 HR again?

Albert Pujols – 0/5…5 for 35 to start off 2011. Paging Jose, paging Jose. Uh oh…he really IS 10 years older than his passport says!

Erik Bedard – 4 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 6:1…I gave you sleeper love and this is how you repay me? Ok, love the upside but he is officially on a short leash with my squad. I can’t blame you for dumping him, but continue to monitor him. The plus is the Ks which are back, but damn that’s a lot of hits!

Asdrubal Carbrea – 3/5, R, HR, 2 RBI…I think he was hanging with Manny this off-season. That’s his 3rd HR already. In 2010, he didn’t hit is 3rd HR until August 28th.

Matt Kemp – 2/4, R, SB…His SIXTH steal in 9 games this season. Now hitting .438. Yes, I own him. Yes, I will talk about him every single day until he reverts to pansy-2010-Kemp.

Aaron Harang – 6 IP, 3 H, ER, 2:2…1.50 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP through two starts against the Champs and the Dodgers. Read (here).

Stephen Drew – 4/4, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB…Inserted into the clean-up spot after just two starts, Drew made the best of it. If he stays there, his value increases. I own him, so I am giddy.

Willie Bloomquist – 3/5, 2 R, SB…Now has 6 steals and upped his average to .394. This has got to stop, right?

Joey Votto – 4/5, R, RBI, SB…Quietly batting .455.

Drew Stubbs – 0/4, R, BB… Now hitting .237. Streaky.

Josh Beckett – 8 IP, 2 H, 10:1…Beckett was awesome on Sunday Night Baseball. This is a different pitcher from what we saw last week. After doing nothing right, Beckett and the Sawx took 2 of 3 from the Yanks and are now just four back of the Orioles!
