Fantasy MLB Spot Starting 08.15.11

Welcome back to Spot Starting.  As you saw the partial standings in Mike’s post this morning, my chances of making the playoffs in our league are pretty much over.  Guess there’s always next year.  (I am the Cubs of our league).  I can at least hope to help my loyal readers out in their playoff push.

For games on Tuesday August 16th  these selected pitchers might be had in your league (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! or ESPN) with percent owned Yahoo/ESPN, (team), and opponent:

Jeff Niemann 49% / 79% (TB) @ BOS

Derek Holland 46% / 38% (TEX) @ LAA

Erik Bedard 46% / 51% (BOS) vs. TB

Jonathon Niese 37% / 18% (NYM) @ SD

My Pick: Jeff Niemann @ Red Sox

Alternate: Derek Holland @ Angels

Deep League Special: none

Niemann has won 6 straight decisions including his last when I picked him.  In his last start against the Sox, he hurled 8 shut out innings of 2 hit ball , striking out 10, but somehow came away with a ND.  He has been a stud in his 7 away starts this year – 4-1/2.79/1.16/.228

As for Holland – you’re on your own.

Results from 08.12.11:

Carl Pavano @ Indians – ND, 7.1, 10 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB…Pavano pitched well enough to win and left with a lead but Perkins blew the save and Carl got a ND.

Results from 08.13.11:

Phil Hughes vs. Rays – W, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB…Hughes may well still go to the Pen, but he sent a message as I expected he would that we wouldn’t go down without a fight.
